So far, I'm really enjoying the second series of LTIH - lots going on, but so to not spoil folks who haven't seen it yet, I've put in a cut text tag in.
So, I've heard comments on other forums about not wanting Caroline & Kate to go down the baby route. I've got a couple of reservations myself, but not necessarily for all the same reasons. Mine are somewhat more in terms of age; Caroline's 46, she's already got two boys in their teens. She's settled as far as having children goes. Kate's said she'll be 42 next week and she's already had four miscarriages when she was married, what makes her hopeful that this next time will workout?
Personally, I'm 40 and single and lesbian. I've pretty much not got a maternal bone in my body. I've left the spawning to my siblings and they've delivered. I've got a cat and a dog that I love. That's as maternal as it gets for me. Even if I were in a relationship, I wouldn't be looking at starting a family. That said, there are several local lesbian couples I know that don't want kids, there are some that do want kids and are planning on having them, and some that already have kids from previous relationships.
As far as tv/film lesbians wanting babies. I think it depends on the writers and how its handled. And not every show with lesbians have/want kids. Some do. So, it seems that LTIH is going that route.
Other shows/films without a mention of lesbians/bisexual women wanting/having kids: Orphan Black's Cosima/Delphine (early days still in relationship), Lip Service (none of them particularly expressed an interest/desire to start families), the only ones in The L Word to have kids were Bette & Tina, and Helena had a child (or stepchild) from a previous relationship that she barely ever saw. I gave up on TLW anyway, but not due to pregnancy story lines but other crap story lines. I'm kinda blanking on other ones at the moment, but then on to film: Imagine Me & You, Nina's Heavenly Delights.
Yes, Grey's Anatomy has gone down that route of having kids, as has The Fosters - well, they're a blend of biological and fostered kids, Guiding Light (Natalia got knocked up). In Lost Girl, Lauren & Bo expressed interest in children in the future, that said, they’re not together yet for any length of time. In Emmerdale Ruby started a relationship with Ali who’s already got two kids and they’ve been looking at maybe having another child together. I’m not sure if they’ve dumped the Shay wanting a baby storyline in Chicago Fire as I haven’t yet watched the eps of this season. Maca & Esther on Hospital Central had three kids.
I’m sure there’s more examples on both sides of the spectrum, just as there are in real life, so I don’t begrudge baby story lines on tele, even if it’s something I don’t want for myself.
