And the general public knows jackshit about history and has completely forgotten or never even was aware of what we did to the Natives in the US. Sometimes beating someone over the head is completely appropriate.

Unobtanium is a trope, it's permission to check your care of science at the door. It's a plot device. It would be absurd to try to explain it's abilities with pseudo science, so he didn't even try.
