Women History Month Day 15-30

Mar 31, 2011 19:45

I fail at doing these once a day. Stupid work. But here are days 15-30 on my Women Character meme.
Day Fifteen: Favorite female character growth arc

The sad thing is, this question is rather hard to answer. Not a lot of females get growth arcs. They kind of just stagnate for become caricatures of themselves. But for my money? I think I like the growth arc Rilla Blythe underwent throughout the Rilla of Ingleside book. Against the backdrop of WWI she went from being a girl only concerned with having fun into a woman, compassionate and mature, without losing her sense of humor, or her optimism. She truly because an awesome female, hopefully even surpassing her mother. Sure it was tough, sure she backslid, but she changed and she grew.

Day Sixteen: Favorite mother character

Percy Jackson’s mom in the Olympian series. That is a mother who gave everything for her kid. She stayed married to an abusive jackass just to protect Percy, she put up with his school bouncing year after year after year. And when Percy was threatened she learned how to use a gun. In about ten seconds. Who else is that awesome?

Day Seventeen: Favorite warrior female character

Oh dear god. Only one? Jaybirds...ummmmm....ermmmm...*whimpers* Too hard! But...okay. Steph Brown from the Batman comics series. She starts to keep her father from getting away wtih stuff, she puts up with the boys club, she’s been Spoiler, she’s been Robin, and she’s now Batgirl. And anyone who doesn’t like a spunky girl who does all that can bite me. Thrice. Shes’ been pregant, that didn’t stop her, she’s been tortured, that didn’t stop her, she didn’t get a case even if she deserved it, she’s competeing in the very male Gotham and she’s kicking ass doing it. She just needs to become Batman and she’s been every single main Bat-character. Who else can say that?

Day Eighteen: Favorite non-warrior female character

Ms. Cooper, from Tamora Pierce’s Tortall series. I love how easily she takes everything in stride. Her son brings home a girl, who’s a page? Sure. No problem. The girl finally wants to learn how to be a girl? Let me get my measuring tape. Due to her son being the Rogue, her place gets attacked ‘what are you going to do, surround me witht he Kings own?” And she gets a love interest at the end of Myles! Even the old fogies get to fall in love in that book ,and how cool is that?

Day Nineteen: Favorite non-human female character

Y’see, this question is actually hard for me. I don’t really watch a lot of sci-fi involving women of alternate races. Most of the time it’s the hot guy who’s the other race or there are no other races. But I think I’m going to have to be slightly sheepish and go with Drusilla from BTVS. She’s just so crazy it’s awesome. I love her nutsiness, the way she expresses it, the way she’s quite smart in her craziness, the dolls, the sheer unapologetic bloodthirtiness that the female vampires have that the male ones don’t

Day Twenty: Favorite female antagonist

Lady Shiva. Gotta be Lady Shiva. Seriously, she’s the best martial artist in the world, she straddles the line of good and evil while still maintaining her bad-assery and she’s SHIVA.

Day Twenty-One: Favorite female character screwed over by canon

The list of who hasn't been screwed over is shorter. But if I had to pick, I’m gonna go with Lian Harper. Her home is constantly blown up, she’s constantly losing babysitters, her mom likes to try to kill her dad on pretty often ocasions, her mom is EVIL...and oh yeah, she got killed in a senseless manner that had no point to the plot except ‘look how serious this prompt is. We killed a six year old in it’.

Day Twenty-Two: Favorite female character you love but everyone else hates

Apparently, Jaenelle, from the Black Jewels books. According to what I’ve read online, she’s a horrible Mary Sue...but as certain icons point out, Mary Sue has devolved to mean any female who can tie her shoes correctly. I love her because she’s still got this soul of compassion, even after the shit that she’s gone through. Also because she refers to deboning humans as ‘as easy as deboning a chicken’. Yeah, there’s some bite to go with that sweet. Not to mention she’s super powerful but she’s also incapable of smaller stuff so her power balances out.

Day Twenty-Thre: Favorite female platonic relationship

I kind of like the relationship between Sheldon and Penny. I know a lot of people ship that, but I can’t quite see it, since it would mean one or the other would have to change their very core self. But as friends? They’re kind of great. They snark, and bitch and probably would like to beat each other up except they don’t, and respect each other’s quirks. it’s a very...sibling-y relationship.

Day Twenty-Four: Favorite female romantic relationship

I think mine is probably El and Peter in White Collar. As they themselves put it, their relationship works. It’s not fraught with tension, it’s not angsty, or one deferring constantly to the other. It’s a real normal partnership where okay, sometimes one of them is a space cadet on some things but they also do things like refer to each other as their ‘best agent’ and protect each other and have arguments over drycleaning and have little code phrases that mean ‘i love you’.

Day Twenty-Five: Favorite mother/daughter and/or sister relationship

I love the sister relationship, what little of we see of it between the Bishop sisters in YA. Again because it is such a real relationship. They don’t entirely get each other, and think the other is crazy but they’re sisters and they tease each other and Kate kicks butt at her sisters wedding. It’s fun it’s quirky and I really wish they’d elaborate on it.

Day Twenty-Six: Favorite classical female character (from pre-20th
century literature or mythology or the like)

Mmmmm. Mine would probably have to be Psyche, from the myths. I am a sucker for a good love story, and Psyche was my favorite Roman myth since I read every single one I could get my grimy little third grade mitts on. Seriously, I mainlined those like crazy at about third or fourth grade because they were about as grownup as I could get my hands on before I had a smart librarian in grade school who finally just said ‘just get books from whatever section you want’. But Psyche was my favorite because she messed up, but then she tried to fix it, and she was the hero in her own story. Which was rare.

Day Twenty-Seven: A female character you have extensive personal canon for

Right now, the character I have the most extensive personal canon for is reboot Nyota Uhura, mostly because I play her in a loose RP thing I got involved in on accident. Since there isn’t much canon, and I get bored making people into carbon copies of their TOS selves, when that doesn’t even make sense since this is a new alternate universe, she has her own bunch of personal canon, that takes out certain racist things from the TOS-verse, not that I’m complaining about TOS having racist stuff, because seriously? At that time, having a black woman who wasn’t household help was craziness. But it also adds to it, and takes her own movie stuff into account, along with blending in little things I like. It’s fun to have a minorly developed character that you can add to. Sadly a lot of women characters are that.

Day Twenty-Eight: Favorite female writer (television, books, movies, etc.)

Hands down, this one has to be Tamora Pierce. I love her, she got me into fantasy literature she doesn’t say things online I want to bash my head into the wall about, she’s funny, she’s a feminist, she writes KICK ASS women characters...seriously most of the questions on this meme, I had to restrain myself from just answering with her characters.

Day Twenty-Nine: Female Fic-rec

How about instead, I just point you to a female-centric fic challenge? The Superheroine fest happens every year, for Comic book characters, and it’s a ball! You should go play in it, read the awesome fic, and participate when it starts again!

Still want a fic rec? Then how about the Chosen and Defined series over at AO3 about the St Trinians verse?

Day Thirty: I think I’ll just steal a meme from somewhere, about listing fifteen of your favorite characters and seeing if anyone can pick out any similiarities. So here goes

1. Keladry of Mindelan (Protector of the Small)
2. Beka Cooper (Beka Cooper)
3. Ella (Ella Enchanted)
4. Kelly Jones (St. Trinians)
5. Victoria (RED)
6. Eleanor of Aquitaine (history)
7. Dinah Lance (DCU YJ)

10. Nyota Uhura (Star Trek XI)
