I can't wait until the kids are a bit older so I can take them travelling. I've only been throughout the UK (European-wise) and even that was not as involved as I had hoped.
There was a time that I could fly to Germany for CAD$5 (about £2) in an era before Ryanair and its ilk. There were occasions on which I went for the weekend. Needless to say, I have neither the time nor stamina to manage that anymore.
My big goal for my kids with regards to travel is to take them to Japan. I think that I may do it next spring, although I'm dreading having both of them on a plane for 14+ hours.
Japan is brilliant. The kids will be will shocked with the difference in cultures but there is SOOO much to see and do.
I was in a suburb of Tokyo called Sumidaku for 10 days. Was meant to meet a mate there but he got called out of country so I was left alone in a country with NO CLUE what to say or do. Bought a travel Japanese book, taught myself some useful phrases and out I went. Found a most fantastic museum and some brilliant shops - bought my first digital camera there, too. Was befriended by the family who ran the restaurant attached to the hotel and we struck up a bargain - they teach me Japanese and I teach them English - meals were also included. I ate well and made some good friends. I would LOVE to go bakc one day.
Well, I spend a lot of time in Tokyo (this autumn, I'll be making my 19th trip since May 2001), so it's important to me that my kids understand why I say I'd live there full time in a heartbeat

I didn't have time/money to stop in Wales while in the UK - that's for another trip it looks like...though I am addicted to the welsh language - do you speak it?
Let's just say that my Welsh is worse than my Japanese, since I can at least make myself understood in the latter. My Welsh vocabulary isn't bad, but I'm horrible with conjugation and consonant morphs (of which there are a lot in Welsh). The language was my father's first, and my grand-parents spoke it a great deal. If you want to hear the language, you can listen to the BBC's daily news (requires Real Media).
