A Temporary Dive

When Fuuma broke through the ring of trees and bushes to the clearing that was his destination, he was surprised to find someone already there. The figure, clad in a long, black robe, was staring at a small pond but turned around at the sound Fuuma had made - and suddenly, he found himself face to face with someone very familiar.

“Oh, Fuuma. I wasn’t expecting to see you.” His brother was unchanged, like always, still smiling the same enigmatic smile, deceptively cheerful.

“Nii-san. I wasn’t expecting to see you, either.” Fuuma’s smile was the mirror image of Seishirou’s. “What brings you here?” he asked, more out of obligation than real curiosity.

“What would you think?” A pause. “But they’re not in this world, either.” Seishirou looked past Fuuma, staring at something only he could see, before continuing, “I heard there was a magic lake in this world, one that can let you contact the one you want to see the most… if you truly wish for it.”

Fuuma laughed, short and cheery. “That’s why I’m here, too - Yuuko-san wanted some of that water. Did you try it yet?”

“I was about to, before you interrupted me.” Seishirou’s smile was like ice, but Fuuma simply sighed before countering it with a matching one.

His brother kept looking at him for a moment, before turning back to face the surface of the pond. Seishirou lifted his hand and muttered something that, to Fuuma, sounded like an incantation of some sort, and the pond’s surface started to suddenly ripple. Round waves formed, disturbing the water, and when it calmed, there was an image of bright green eyes, blinking in astonishment.

“S-Seishirou-san! How-“ Subaru’s voice was trembling. Fuuma tried to tell himself he wasn’t disappointed that his image was the only one reflected on the water.

“Never mind that, Subaru-kun. I don’t have much time, the spell won’t last long.” Seishirou paused for a second and then smiled. “You look cute, as always.”

Subaru blushed at this - a considerable feat, Fuuma thought, considering his vampire paleness. But when he glanced at his brother, he lifted his eyebrow in surprise; well, this was interesting. The smile Seishirou was wearing was the most real he had ever seen on him.

However, before he could be sure how to react to this (or whether to react at all), Subaru answered. “I… I’m fine, Seishirou-san. How about you? Have you… been well?” he asked, clearly concerned. Fuuma tried not to think of how different his shy, hesitant expression was from his twin’s perpetual scowl.

“I’m as fine as I can be expected to be, Subaru-kun. I suppose you won’t tell me where you are right now?” Seishirou’s voice, seemingly gentle, had a dangerous edge to it.

In the reflection, Subaru looked over his shoulder, and when he turned back, his eyes were sad.

“I… cannot do that, I’m sorry. Kamui…”

Seishirou simply smiled, placating. “I know, your brother won’t approve. It’s no matter. I will find you, Subaru-kun. And when I do…” Seishirou opened his eyes, and whatever his expression was, it made Subaru freeze.

“Seishirou-san, I-“ However, before either Seishirou or Fuuma could hear what Subaru had to say, his image started to blur again, and in moments, the reflection of the sky had replaced the place where his image had been just seconds earlier.

Seishirou rose from his place beside the pond, and Fuuma contemplated briefly on the merits of tactical retreat, but when his brother turned to face him, his expression was back at his customary smile.

“I’ll be taking my leave, then,” Seishirou said, and before Fuuma had a chance to say anything, his eye was burning with magic and the transportation circle appeared below him.

“Have a nice journey,” Fuuma answered.

The last look he got of his brother before he vanished into whirling smoke was his eyes gleaming in an unsettling, obsessive look, a secretive smile on his face.
