He tried talking to the candleholder first, but she kept dripping wax onto him whenever she got excited. The vase was a little too preoccupied with its flowers and he suspected the kettle was bipolar.

That left the lamp.

The lamp, who seemed to get along with everyone else, but who had hardly spoken to Changmin. Well, the first time the lamp talked to him, Changmin was so surprised he accidently spilled tea onto his fraying cord and somehow caused a short circuit. The lamp was then taken away and the teacup gossiped that maybe their mistress, the mad sorceress, had decided to do away with the lamp, poor lad. To Changmin’s relief, the lamp was back a week later, but Changmin had since been too embarrassed to apologise for the incident.

He gathered his courage and wobbled towards the lamp, he was careful not to spill any tea.

The lamp, who had been glowing, turned his light off at the sight of Changmin. The room was suddenly darker and Changmin felt himself heat up in embarrassment.

‘If you didn’t want to talk to me, you could have just said so,’ he said to the lamp.

The lamp remained unlit, a contrast to his usual bright demeanor around others. Obviously this did not extend to Changmin.

‘I just thought that if the light wasn’t on, there would be less chance of an accident happening,’ the lamp said, ‘like last time.’

‘I didn’t do it on purpose,’ Changmin replied defensively.

‘I know,’ the lamp told him, ‘and I wasn’t blaming you.’

Changmin was relieved, but then didn’t know what else to say. The silence between them turned awkward.

‘I just…’ the lamp started and wobbled a little, ‘I thought that maybe you didn’t like me…’

‘Huh?’

‘I mean, you did spill tea on me…’

Changmin let out a puff of steam in embarrassment, ‘I was just… surprised.’

Which was true. Changmin was just at teapot, a boring teapot. On the other hand, the lamp was admired by all, always bright and happy and bringing warmth to everyone who was lucky enough to stand close to him.

His words seemed to please the lamp because the room was suddenly filled with light again and when Changmin looked at the lamp, he was glowing.

‘I never did get to finish introducing myself last time,’ the lamp said, ‘I’m Yunho.’

‘Yes I know!’ Changmin blurted out, and felt the tea he was holding boil a little in mortification.

‘I like the red bow on top of your lid, Changmin,’ Yunho told him, his voice was smooth and kind and Changmin let out another puff of steam.

‘I… I like the shade of pink of your lampshade and bunny patterns on it,’ Changmin muttered in a rush, ‘and the curves of your body, I mean the shape of your body, I mean -‘

Yunho’s light flickered slightly.

The tea was boiling in earnest now. His lid cluttered loudly as his spout let out another puff of steam.

He thought he heard Yunho chuckling.

‘Are you usually this hot, or just happy to see me?’

There was a buzz in Changmin’s mind and he wobbled. The movement caused tea to spill around him and Changmin watched in horror as the puddle reached Yunho.

There was a spark and then the room plunged into darkness.
