Google has begun insisting that I want my Google searches to be in Portuguese, presumably because the email associated with my YouTube account was from .st (São Tomé and Príncipe, open to the world for novelty domains). I put my location into the account and changed the primary email on it to my Comcast address, but after doing so, Google.com still ( Read more... )

Huh. I finally learn something about ST&P beyond location.

I suppose you could teach yourself Portuguese, but unless you're like the protagonist of Phenomenon, you may not find it worthwhile.

1) I changed my browser language settings to [en-GB] instead of [en-US] to see what would happen. Now, YouTube continually asks if I'm sure I actually want that language setting.

2) I also set my Android phone's language to [en-GB] and now searches default to UK sites.

I can understand attempts to match language to location, but those should be easily overriden once and then allowed to stand. Also, why the fuck can't I be in one country and want another country's language? Better yet, what about countries that have more than one language, or languages with more than one country? No wonder Québécois get so pissy.

Well, the latter case is teeechnically handled by the different elements in language tags: you mention en-GB versus en-US, and there is also en-CA versus fr-CA, for instance, and then there's the (fairly terrible for this usage, but people insist on using it anyway, and maybe makes sense as a fallback) GeoIP versus Accept-Language versus server-side user-account preferences, and…

Internationalization is very tricky in general. Seamless internationalization of all software is probably orders of magnitude less tricky than, say, world peace, but it's up there.

As for your case, ceruleanst: I'm curious whether you've searched for human-language override options in the account preferences (you may already have). Also whether by “clearing cookies” you mean a Google-specific function of some kind or just vaporizing all your browser cookies at once; the former might not hit all the affiliated sites, for a number of reasons. (I say this only because I'd like to help if I can; I don't expect you to do a full support-esque dialogue with me if you don ( ... )

Hurm. The only "ETA" I'm familiar with stands for "estimated time of arrival." I know I could easily do a search and find out what this new ETA means (I've seen it elsewhere, but figured it was just being used in error), but I've decided to go with the tried-and-true method and ask.

Well, it's good that the problem is gone. But I am curious whether there is an image of this “shrugpony” now.

By some yardstick, I suppose so. Checking my files, I see I made it in July of last year, but didn't apply it to any of the six posts since then. It's been used in comments. I'm keeping "2X FACEPALM COMBO" under my hat for a special occasion.

I see, facepalm is a spice to use sparingly!
