I suppose you could teach yourself Portuguese, but unless you're like the protagonist of Phenomenon, you may not find it worthwhile.

I can understand attempts to match language to location, but those should be easily overriden once and then allowed to stand. Also, why the fuck can't I be in one country and want another country's language? Better yet, what about countries that have more than one language, or languages with more than one country? No wonder Québécois get so pissy.

Internationalization is very tricky in general. Seamless internationalization of all software is probably orders of magnitude less tricky than, say, world peace, but it's up there.
As for your case, ceruleanst: I'm curious whether you've searched for human-language override options in the account preferences (you may already have). Also whether by “clearing cookies” you mean a Google-specific function of some kind or just vaporizing all your browser cookies at once; the former might not hit all the affiliated sites, for a number of reasons.
