Very, very nice. It fits in well with the feel of canon.

Squeeee! Or, rather, ::sniffle:: My word, that was lovely! Thanks so much for writing that for me. I'm chuffed. And I loved how you used the prompt, because that really wasn't at all what my mind went to. And I'm impressed! :)
I really like what you've done here, to make the happily ever after feeling of the end of the film take on a deeper resonance, so we really have to think about Wash's death. Somehow his spending time with River, to become her friend, is so poignant but also terribly bittersweet.
One by one, the others find some sort of equilibrium-Mal, burning with righteousness, Zoe, carved in marble.
I really like that, the implications of what has happened, the way you've evoked those two characters.
But he has said nothing, and to River, this says everything.
So simple, but so effective.
Lovely stuff! You should write more, if this was your first attempt at FF! :)

Heeh, I'm so glad you like it. I was leery about picking this prompt but I realized that I just didn't have anything to give in Buffy/Angel at the moment, so I decided to risk a new fandom.

Regarding the sun parasols, I confess that I had completely forgotten about incorporating them until I was about half-way through, and at that point I was like "OMGWTF DEEP IN THE BLACK WHAT WOULD ANYONE BE USING A SUN PARASOL FOR *PANIC*" but it worked out in the end. :-)
