We live and die in fear

May 02, 2007 20:23

The police are supposed to 'protect and serve' the public. The public...meaning everyone. Yesterday's May Day demonstrations in LA show that the police are now being used to terrorize and oppress the public, the very people who they are supposed to serve.

This may probably the most important video you'll see this year.

That video takes away any fear I had and replaces it with anger. And frustration...what are we supposed to DO in times like these?

Go to as many protests as you can. I admire Gandhi's advice of standing firm, be willing to accept blows for what you believe in, but never retaliate. If I was at the protest, I would not have left when ordered to. Let them arrest me.

Stop paying taxes; donate the money to charities instead, and say that in your tax returns.

I may go to protests, but I won't stop paying taxes. I love my libraries and roads and firefighters. Besides...I usually get money BACK on taxes. And I don't have a choice about what comes out of my paycheck.

You can ask HR departments to change your withholdings on federal tax payments. Mine certainly lets me do that.

As far as libraries and roads and firefighters...I've nothing against local taxes. It's the federal one that I can't stand; I'm not sure I can see my contributions to social security, medicare, and science research outweighing the horror of having MY labor being spent on bullets, bombs, and torture.

If you get $500 back on $3000 in taxes you paid, that's still $2500 to Uncle Sam.

Mm, not much different than 1999, only I wouldn't think the police would ordinarily try to start a riot over such a small protest.
