Shock
A shriek and then warm wetness sprayed across his face.
“Gei ai de lao tian!” Mal barked irritably, running his hand through his soaked hair.
”Sir, I don’t think God will step in here.” Zoë strained to keep a smile from her face.
Mal shook his head and turned to yell at the retreating backs of the perpetrators. “We do not have the coin for you to be teachin’ the boy about water balloons! Water’s expensive!”
Zoë had her hand covering her mouth, the mirth too intense to hide.
“What’s so funny! We’re three weeks in the Black, low on fuel, food, and a powerful desire to not die of dehydration…” Mal queried grumpily.
Unable to speak for fear of bursting into laughter, Zoë pointed over Mal’s shoulder.
Jayne was stalking up the stairs, red and blue dripping from his hair and body. His eyes glittered dangerously. “Where is Crazy and that boy a’ mine!”
Mal stood, shock writ large taking his voice. While the sight of his merc dripping with colored water was humorous enough, the mostly white towel wrapped around the big man’s waist clinched it. Tiny flowers and hearts embroidered along the edge accented the incongruity perfectly.
