Tumblr doesn't work the way I like communication to work; I like ordered threads and conversation. I like links embedded in the posts instead of people disassociating works from their authors, I like personalities and long posts, and I like engaging directly with people who are consuming my fannish works and with people whose fannish works I am consuming.
I embrace Tumblr because it is where people are - and because of the many pretty pictures and capslocking fannish squee - but I look forward to our next fannish migration. :)
....yes, but it's tricky. There were issues of moderation that came up with forums that are different from comment threads, and also bandwidth, though I think we looked at installing pre-existing forum packages, but...yeah, that was not my department. I have the vague memory that they did put together forums for internal use? but nobody used them? So IDK - I was never really a forum person per se. I just want more interoperability!
Between LJ, forums/lists, and tumblr, I probably like forums the best (you put your finger on what I disliked about LJ: dentistry all up in my fanfic.) Also, while it's not a feature per se, as a diehard lurker, I have to examine my own behavior and confess that tumblr has brought me out of my shell much more than LJ ever did. But all the annoying things about it are indeed annoying.
That said - the most recent mobile tumblr update seems to add a magic "source" tag to every post w/ original attribution.... So... Tumblr might be trying to improve?
I hope so! I think there are some things they could do to improve communication across the board--even a simple messaging system, threaded comments....
I guess I can understand the "too much personality" thing since a favorite science fiction novelist of mine seemingly uses 95% of her blog to talk about her home improvement projects so I don't read it anymore, but I do appreciate people no longer thinking I'm a man or another fic author, Te, which I used to get a lot before LJ.
I find Tumblr too frustrating to bother with since I'm on the internet to talk and read.

Has the OTW ever considered building forum functionality into (or alongside) AO3?

I'll be happy when activity here picks up more with the new TV season. Summers are rough.
