To all those that read this, I am in a bit of a bind and need some help. After a dismal attempt at trying to build my own PC for the past 2 years (getting the parts for such around xmas time as it were) I am basically turning in the towel for it. My current rig while it is decent, is such a mishmash of parts that the last time I took it to the ( Read more... )

If you ask me, the biggest thing you need to replace is the motherboard because currently AGP is on its way out and PCI-E is on the mainstream with DDR3. Replacing the motherboard however may mean replacing the video card and the RAM as well. Apart from that keep your hard-drives, soundcard and your DVD-drive. Keep your system as a backup just in case "something" happens.

I just built my brother the following:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 MB
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775
4 GB OCZ DDR2-800 RAM
1 500 GB Seagate SATA HD
1 Sony SATA DVD±RW
EVGA GeForce 9800 PCIe
500W power supply

I bought this all at Microcenter locally and it came in under $1000.

Eh, the parts aren't incompatible. If anything it was the motherboard, like others have said. Building your own computer is still your best bet, if only that it won't come with some very annoying pre-loaded software.

Also, I do not imagine you will be able to purchase a pre-built computer with anything but Windows Vista, and forget downgrading--proprietary is as proprietary does. If you build your own, you might be able to still grab a copy of Windows XP.

Hmm...well like others have said the bits shouldn't rea2lly be incompatible or they either would do nothing or maybe not even fit into one another. Be careful about buying a branded PC though -- often they will stiff you over prices for repair, and you might not always be able to open up the PC (or bye bye warranty x.x ( ... )

My recommendation would be to look over the $1000 machines offered by the brands like Compaq and hewlitt packard for the parts and non os software you should order, use the rest of the money for the windows os, be it vista, or preferably, xp. Also make sure you get two drives.
