As a whole, the Space Battles forum has been a good place to hang out, discus fanfiction and other fandom related things, but every so often I give into the urge to venture into the Non Sci-fi Debates section. And then I run into people like this asshole ( Read more... )

I've found that for most people, motherhood (and fatherhood) end when they can send their kid to school... then it's "blame the teacher"-hood...

Vast majority
Meaning there is a portion of the population that does not like it but are now stuck with it. We could be here all day discussing that.

Motherhood is in fact arguably the most important job there is
Yeah, I would argue that point.

given the survival of our species utterly depends upon it
Also a lengthy discussion but species go extinct all the time. Only the arrogant think we are so special that we should survive. The world would still continue without humans. IMO.

I love how he completely skipped over the way we devalue what is considered "women's work," and went straight to bullshit gender essentialism. Like, yes, housework and child-rearing are in fact jobs, and we do admit they have value or else no one would ever be willing to pay for a maid or a sitter. But we expect women to do them all, for free, often in addition to work outside the home, and none of it is acknowledged. And that's some straight bullshit. BUT NO, DO GO ON ABOUT BLAH BLAH SPECIES BLAH SACRED BLAH BLAH YOU ALL SECRETLY WANT THIS. Nitwit.

Barrrrfff.

Motherhood is a role, a duty/obligation perhaps-- but it is not a job. Not in the concrete or legal sense, anyway. Not only is there no pay but there's no option to leave for advancement or more fulfillment the most part!

And gee, where's fathers in this? Why is all the onus just instantly shoved on the mother?

As for the "survival of our species" part...I had an interesting discussion with a cool PNB about this. She has two young children and says she loves her kids but hates being a mother. She gets flak for this. I said I admire that honesty, especially when she said "Trust me, your dreams just go to shit-- why do you think there's so many parents who force their dreams onto their children? If women knew just HOW tiring, thankless, and soul-sucking motherhood was, the human race would cease to exist."

No, more women hate being mothers than that douchecopter thinks. They're just discouraged from coming out and saying it for fear of attacks from the Cult of Mommy.
