Summer Reading and Useless Crap *headdesk*

Woohoo! Just what I always wanted....summer reading. I've never had to do summer reading before. The schools I went to all over the country never did that. This school, here in Louisiana, however, does. We have a uniform-ish dress code and summer reading. Okay, the collared-shirt-and-khakis-base-outfit thing I've done before, back in early grade ( Read more... )

school, life

For the most part, I do agree with your interpretation of the so-called "classics." I was an English major in college...so I'm pretty sure I read most, if not all, of them. A few were surprisingly good, others not so much. However, they are all probably good for you to know. The thing I hated the most was when professors would make you interpret what the author was trying to say, which is something that you can't know unless the author had come out and said, "yes, I meant for the umbrella to symbolize that." Otherwise, we're putting meanings where none may exist.

Anyway, have fun. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites :). Oh, what other ones are on the list?

Just those two. It's AP English, after all, so we're going to beat everything to death, which means in the entire the semester the class lasts we'll only have time to go over those two. :P

I'm totally with you on the uniform/book nonsense. After going from S. Florida, where there was no uniforms and definitely no required summer reading, I came here and had to deal with the exact same thing you did!

I will say I have to disagree with your POV on classic lit. A lot it that I've read is actually as good as it's portrayed (Not ALL of it. The Jungle is a book I REFUSE to pick up ever again!), so our opinions definitely differ there!

So you never had to do any summer reading? Lucky girl! When I was in junior high and high school, we had to do it each year. In my senior year I was in AP English and we had 6 books for summer reading. But it was stuff like Arthurian literature, Mythology, Cyrano De Bergerac.... We didn't have to read any of the books you mentioned, so unfortunately I can't help you out there. I've never read Crime and Punishment... I've heard mixed things about it. Some people calling it a "classic", others not liking it at all.

And I know what you mean about being able to tell if authors had an obvious anti-religious slant. Ugh... I had to take several philosophy classes in college. It bugged me somewhat, but I just did the work so I could pass.

I hope all goes well and it doesn't bog you down too much! Hee... and I had to wear the uniform. I went to Catholic school from grades 7-12. Blazer and pleated skirt. Not too comfortable in the freezing northeast winters. :P
