Hmmm.. hello. I'm not a hacker, but hope to one day do something cool, like reverse engineer a closed protocol or write a linux driver. I'm used to most computer nerds being guys, so I think this community is great for something different. Hooray for women-computer-geeks!

Hey there!

Glad to see you've joined!

You mentioned writing a linux driver... do you run linux? what distro?

Hi and happy new year! Fedora Core 3.. yes.. time for an update :<
I haven't had any major problems and there's good support for fedora so I probably won't change distros anytime soon.

What do you use and why? What are your hacker-ish aspirations?

I was using Fedora Core 2. I had used RH 7,8, and 9 before that.

Honestly? I've had it up to here with Fedora/RH. Somehow my package management always ends up getting messed up somehow.

Currently I'm running Knoppix off of CD. My system is kinda shoestringy right now (i'm being too lazy to get it running right), but it works, and it's worked for months and months and months.

Hacker-ish aspirations? I don't really have any, honestly. The boys will make you think it's about one upping each other with knowledge. That's not really what it's about. Hacker is a state of mind as much as it is a set of skills. It's about thinking creatively outside the box to solve problems. And that's what I do.

Some people are more into hardware, some people are more into software. I'm into solving problems creatively, whether it's on a computer or in the kitchen (check out 2600_cuisine for some cool kitchen hackery) or wherever. I'm more the MIT/RMS definition of hacker. Or at least I try to be ( ... )

hehe I was going to mention the only noticeable problem seemed to be package management.. but I use apt-get which works pretty well.

Yeh I totally agree with that definition of hacker. There are ppl that tweak their coffee machines :) I usually associate hackery with some sort of technology, so I hadn't thought of cookery as hackery, but I guess, why not?

I'm not sure exactly why I'm attracted to computers. I just wanted to know how they worked - they seemed mysterious. And I'm not a hands-on person so I like the idea of building machines out of words. :)

The queer tux is cool! Sounds like you are doing some good things for the world :)
