Don't forget "science fiction" - Ефремов, Стругацкие. That was almost the only stuff really worth reading. It also provided a connection to western literature since translations of science fiction were less scrutinized than other western literature.
There were also a few descent books among war novels. I suppose it belongs to the "heroic" category, but it was really a thing in itself.
I almost agree about "almost the only stuff really worth reading" :) I mentioned science fiction (well, fantasy - but back then the boundaries were not yet drawn, and even Dandelion Wine was officially labeled "science fiction"), along with history and children books, among the genres I would not talk about. Partly because they were treated somewhat differently by censorship, partly just to limit the scope...
