lie down beside me
"Lie down beside me," Jonghyun says to his roommate.
"Again?" Kibum asks; not annoyed, not tired--just curious. Ever since three weeks ago, Jonghyun had been asking him to do the same thing every day, at the same time. He looks over his shoulder, eyes glancing sharply at his roommate, and he sighs. Bookmarking his textbook with his pencil, Kibum moves with a lethargic pace towards the bed of his troublesome roommate. He never understood why Jonghyun asks him to do this, never understood why he complies, never understood why he takes care of him. He just doesn't.
Jonghyun has his chin planted on the pillow, stomach pressed against the mattress and the rest of his body limp under the thin covers. His dark brown eyes are glazed and not seeing, facing the wall in front of him. He shifts to make some room, eyes never leaving the wall as Kibum dips into the bed and slides smoothly underneath the covers.
"Seriously," Kibum starts as he props his elbow on the same pillow, putting his head on his fist. "You're going to die a lonely man."
"Why do you say that?" Jonghyun asks absently, voice soft. His voice didn't use to be like this. He was always loud, even when he's shy or nervous. Kibum remembered that he had to throw pillows at him to shut up--but now, Kibum throws pillows at him to speak up.
"Because you're so depressing," Kibum answers, gaze trained on Jonghyun. He doesn't get the reaction he was hoping for, so he sighs again. "I won't go near your bed ever again if you don't tell me what's going on."
A hint of a smirk passes his features, and Jonghyun finally lands his eyes on him. "You said that last time."
"I'm for real this time, Kim Jonghyun," Kibum says. When Jonghyun shakes his head, he resists the urge to hit his arm. "Maybe I'll ask your friends."
"I didn't tell them anything."
"I'll ask your mother then. Or your sister. Maybe both."
A laugh escapes his lips, but it had no humor or anything positive with it. Kibum furrows his eyebrows and Jonghyun brings his gaze back to the wall.
"I didn't tell anyone. I'm not planning to," Jonghyun says.
"You're stupid," Kibum replies, dropping his head onto his pillow. The scent of Jonghyun's new shampoo wafts to his senses and he stares up at the ceiling. "And hopeless."
He doesn't see the agreeing look Jonghyun sends him.
"Lie down beside me," Jonghyun says to him as soon as he stepped in their dorm.
It's been four months since the change in Jonghyun began, and winter caused Jonghyun to stay in his bed nearly all the time. Kibum hardly sees him out of the dorm anymore.
"I've got homework to do," Kibum answers, dropping his bag and textbooks on the floor. He kicks his shoes off and slides into the warm bed, cold hands trapped in between his jean-clad thighs, and Jonghyun moves slightly.
"You're cold."
"And you're warm," Kibum points out, shivering once. "What, did you stay here all day again?"
"Sort of," Jonghyun says. Noticing his roommate's hard stare, Jonghyun adds, "It's not my fault that my class was cancelled."
"Is that a legit reason?"
"Am I not trustworthy?" Jonghyun shoots back, a slight teasing tone in his voice. Kibum hears it, and he smiles widely to himself because Jonghyun is slowly becoming himself again, slowly becoming that Kim Jonghyun he adored a year ago, slowly becoming the stupid, loud guy he had a crush on during their freshman year. He's recovering from whatever has broken him, and Kibum likes to think that it's because of him. (But maybe it's not.)
"You're not telling me, are you?" Kibum asks, and he knows that Jonghyun knew what he was talking about because he looks back at the wall in front of him and doesn't reply.
It's only when Kibum is about to doze off in Jonghyun's bed that he says, "I don't know."
"Lie down next to me," Jonghyun says, eyes watching Kibum.
Winter holidays just ended and Kibum is back from Daegu. In Jonghyun's opinion, he looks ridiculously adorable stupid with a scarf covering the bottom half of his face, bags in each hand and on his back, with dark combat boots contrasting his light-colored jeans. His coat doesn't seem to match either.
"Seriously?" Kibum says incredulously, but he carefully puts his things down and strips off the heavy articles of clothing, all of them pooling onto the floor. He has to admit that in the one week he spent in Daegu, he felt incomplete without Jonghyun's stupid lie down with me shit.
It astonished him that Jonghyun isn't staring at the wall as he said that, that Jonghyun isn't watching the wall while he makes his way towards his bed. Kibum doesn't know if he was dreaming or not, but then Jonghyun suddenly pulls him into a tight hug and Kibum can't decide if he was still asleep or not.
"You're back," Jonghyun murmurs on top of his head. His arms are squished in between them, and his head is just under Jonghyun's chin, face unintentionally buried into his chest.
"What," Kibum says while he tries to breathe properly with the rapid hammering of his heart, "has gotten into you? Are you really Kim Jonghyun?"
"You don't miss me?" Jonghyun asks, and again, Kibum is surprised to hear the teasing tone Jonghyun often uses when he jokes with him. It's refreshing to hear it, very refreshing indeed, and Kibum pushes him away a bit, just so he can look at his face.
"Of course I did," Kibum replies, and then he examines him for the next few moments; noticing the bags underneath his eyes, the hollowness of his cheeks, his chapped lips--he looked quite sick. "Did something happen? You look terrible."
"I'm fine," Jonghyun tells him, pulling him back into a hug. "I'm just glad you're back."
"So I guess you missed me too."
Jonghyun replies non-verbally, and it's more than Kibum could've expected.
It's only a few days before summer, and Kibum enters their dorm, prepared to lie down next to his roommate like he typically does. Jonghyun doesn't fail to say lie down beside me and Kibum doesn't fail to sigh before slipping underneath the covers despite the high temperature. It's their routine now.
"You're never going to tell me?" Kibum asks again, eyes hopeful because Jonghyun is starting to look and act like his old self (not counting the new habit of lying down with Kibum he had acquired the past year). He's still not completely there yet, but it was way better than his initial condition.
"I don't need to tell you anything," Jonghyun tells him after a moment of silence. He doesn't stare at the wall with glassy eyes anymore. He doesn't ignore the warmth of Kibum's body anymore. A tiny quirk of his lips got Kibum's heartbeat running red lights.
He sighs again. But it's alright. He realizes that perhaps it's the only thing they need to do in order to help each other. Perhaps, someday, they'll understand what's going on beyond the surface.
However, right now, this is all they need.
"Just lie down beside me."
