It's funny how we absorb a certain culture's traditions based on pop culture. Halloween is not a Philippine holiday and I highly doubt that people here even know the reason for the celebration. Most of what Filipinos know are carried over through TV shows or movies, we know that it's time for ghosts and scary things ( Read more... )

When I was a kid we lived in England and Halloween was not a big deal there either. (I think that's changed a bit in recent years, particularly in the larger cities.) Guy Fawkes Day on November 5 was when everyone celebrated. Our British friends would come on the Air Force base with us to trick or treat and then we would go with them to their Bonfire Night celebrations. I actually preferred the Guy Fawkes stuff.

I actually don't take my kids trick or treating. We live in an old neighborhood with a lot of older people who aren't enthused about that kind of thing. We take them to Boo in the Zoo (big costume party at the zoo) and go to a pumpkin patch for a hayride and stuff.

Celebrations really differ from one place to another. Like New Year isn't a big deal in the States (it seems like fourth of July is a bigger holiday) but it's a big deal over here.

Guy Fawkes Day sounds interesting! I like the Bonfire Night idea. We don't have a lot of bonfires over here because it's so hot.

At least your kids still get to dress up in costume to attend the zoo party even though they can't go trick or treating in your local neighborhood. Have fun with the party this weekend! :)

I've never been a huge Hallowe'en person, although my Mom used to decorate the house cleverly and pass candy out to the trick-or-treaters; now that I'm grown where I live we don't get any trick-or-treaters. I have no interest in partying or dressing up for Hallowe'en. Such a fuddy-duddy, I guess. :D Bonfires sound like fun, especially a small one on a cool night on a beach, with a few friends. *nods* More my style. I just need the money to have access to the beach, please!

What's a columbary?

I don't like dressing up for big parties either! If it's just a small one with a couple of friends then I'm fine with that. I never tried trick or treating as a child though.

A columbary is like a cemetery except it only has locker-like slots for the cremation ashes.
