Day 30 - Haunted House/Cemetery
The floor, it keeps creaking under his feet, with every step he takes. He keeps running down the dark corridor, dust dancing all around him, the walls shaking behind him.
“Come on now, why do you want to run so badly? I thought we were having fun? I’m not done playing yet!”
The voice, giggling and taunting, Genta can hear it through the walls, and he screams, throws his arms in the air, the walls exploding, bursting in blue flames.
And there he is, sliding out of the broken wall, transparent but full of life somehow, or at least that’s how his face looks. Greedy. Evil. Genta can feel the tears of fear in his eyes, the tears of anger. They lost one, didn’t they? The house behind the cemetery, everyone was scared of it, everyone said it was haunted. But they had to visit, they had to see if their friend had been trapped here.
“What did you do to Shizuya?” he asks, despite the panic in his voice, and the ghost tilts his head, suddenly looking a little puzzled. Nice acting…
“Oh, you mean that boy that got lost in our garden last night? I think Kaito played with him…”
“YOU’RE KAITO, TOO!” Genta screams, and it happens again, the explosion. The wooden planks between them explode in the air, the bright blue flames surrounding the ghost. But they can’t work on him, and Genta doesn’t know how to control his power anymore. “Where is Shizuya?”
“Well, Kaito played with him, and he’s Kaito, too. And I’m Kaito, yes…isn’t it cute?” the boy laughs, he’s laughing at Genta and he’s mocking him, and it makes Genta’s head spin. The triple Kaitos, yes, these are the ghosts the people spoke of. Three boys, same age, same name, disappearing in this house years ago.
He turns his back, starts running again, turning at the corner until he finds the stairs, and he almost jumps them down, stumbling on the last one and landing with his face on the floor. He can’t let them get him too, but he has to find the others…Shizuya, did they kill him?
“He wasn’t playing well at all…”
The pout, it sends chills down to Genta’s spine, and he lifts his head, looks around panting. He’s there, staring at him from where he’s floating next to the big grandfather clock. This Kaito looks almost as young as Genta, and he seems dissatisfied.
“He was always losing, I got bored after playing with him a bit…he was always losing…”
Where is he? Where haven’t they looked at yet? Where are the others?
“Did Kaito tell you that I played with him?” he asks now, and Genta pushes himself up, looks up behind his shoulder to make sure he’s not being followed. “I wanted to play more, but your friend was very bad at hide-and-seek…and then he got locked into the hope chest, and you know what? You can’t open that from the inside, how silly of him…”
“…you killed him?” Genta chokes, clenching his fists; where, where should he look? “You let him suffocate?”
“I don’t know, I got bored of always knowing where he hid, and I left him up in the attic…” the boy’s voice trails off, and then he stops, looking behind Genta. Genta can hear it too, now. The slithering.
The white snake, it crawls on the floor towards them, curls around Genta’s ankles. Noeru. The world stops, the time freezes, and the boy’s heart is clenched in his chest. No, no, no…
“Will you play with me?” the other Kaito asks, moves away from the grandfather clock, and his eyes are shining, thrill and danger and death, it makes Genta want to throw up. Where should he go first? The snake is a clear message, but the attic, he needs to check up on Shizuya; maybe, maybe they haven’t lost him yet, maybe…
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” He screams, the tears now running down his cheeks, but they feel frozen against his skin, and he’s blinded by his own explosions, can only disappear, run, follow the snake that’s slithering back to where it came from. And it leads him away, down to the cellar, where there are no windows, and the pink sparkles of light keep flickering, the weak light almost not enough for Genta to look around.
Why are they flickering? If they’re flickering, if they’re weak…
“You don’t really think those flames can keep me away, do you?”
The chuckle, it’s pure venom, even worse than the two Kaitos Genta encountered already. He doesn’t recognize the voice, but it echoes in the walls, and the smell of spilled wine, it makes everything worse. Is it wine? It has to be wine, it can’t be anything else…
There’s glass breaking, bottles exploding, and at least now Genta has more light to be able to view his surroundings. It’s huge, the cellar, way bigger than he had thought, and the snake leaves his side, crawling on the floor away from the broken bottles, until it reaches the two people on the cold tiles. And there’s a third one, but it’s a demon, it has to be one, because ghost is not enough.
But he turns his head, looks over at Genta, and there’s that devious smirk on his face, the satisfaction in his transparent eyes. “Oh, is that your-“
“DON’T!”
The white flames, they can’t really harm the third Kaito, but Noeru attacks anyway, Shime still leaning on him, blood dripping down from his head. His ankle, it looks bruised and swollen, too, and Genta feels another pinch of panic. The sparkles, the pink sparkles, they were weak…
The laughter, it reaches his ears again, and the third Kaito moves closer to Noeru and Shime, passing through the white flames. “I wonder which one I should go for first…” he whispers, pure poison. “You took your time exploring the attic, shouldn’t we continue now?”
The attic…
It’s only then that Genta notices; the hope chest at the corner of the room, it’s open. He moves, runs, ignoring the others, and then leans down, feels his body overflowing with despair.
And then he gasps, new tears filling his eyes. The corpse inside, that’s it. A corpse. The color, the lack of motion, the open eyes. Shizuya, they’ve lost him.
“You killed him…” he stammers, and Kaito shrugs, humming in amusement.
“It wasn’t me, it was Kaito-“
“SHUT UP! SHUT UP, SHUT UP!” Genta roars; what else is left in there? The walls, the ground, the barrels, it all explodes, and Noeru covers Shime’s body with his own to protect him. The snake, it’s back around Genta’s ankles, raising its head towards the ghost. But Genta can barely feel it, can barely feel anything. How are they going to get out?
“Blow a hole! Crack the wall, tear it down!”
Shime’s voice, so strong compared to how weak he looked, and through the dust, Genta can see him, his face a pain of mask. Blow a hole?
“Blow a hole, Genta, they can’t follow us outside the house! DO IT!”
Kaito is not smiling now. He looks pissed. “You bastard-“
The snake, it’s climbing up around Genta’s legs, then to his waist, and then it’s resting on his arm. A look, at the two of them, the two who are still fighting, and for a split second, Genta allows his pain for Shizuya to subside. They need to get out of here.
It’s big, and loud, and blinding. The wall, the ceiling, they collapse, the light from outside piercing down, and they can feel it, the ground, the whole house shaking. It’s like an earthquake, and they have to hurry if they don’t want to be trapped underground for the rest of their lives.
But Noeru is already standing on his feet, despite the chaos, and Shime is on his back, and Genta looks at Shizuya, wishes he wouldn’t feel that stab in his heart. They can’t take him, not now…
A gust of air, and everything feels chilly. The demon, the ghost, it’s storming to the front towards them, hissing. But they can’t stop. They have to get out.
