Day 26 - Love/Heartbreak

He’s not staying. The top, taking the top, everything they said they would do…not happening.

Tsukasa just stands there, the news hard to swallow, hard to sink in. The look on Fujio’s face says it all, says how he expected that kind of reaction. They know each other well, after all, painfully well. The wind feels frozen against Tsukasa’s face, but the words he heard make him feel colder, actually.

He doesn’t need a reason. He doesn’t care about a reason. What matters is the result, not how Fujio reached that decision.

“It’s gonna be lonely a little, isn’t it?” Fujio asks, that quiet chuckle that tries to comfort and break the ice at the same time, the kind of chuckle that would make people snap, because how can he be so heartless? But Tsukasa knows better, knows what he’s trying to do.

A little lonely, huh…how ironic. No, it won’t be a little lonely, it will be worse than that, and Tsukasa can already feel all the energy in him disappearing, all the courage and the thrill, everything he was supposed to achieve. The view from the top, the view they promised each other they would enjoy together. Always together, until now.

“Tsukasa?”

Stayed silent for too long, huh. The boy shrugs, finally looks at him in the eye, but words, they are just not coming out. What is he supposed to say? Take care? Call me every day? Pathetic. He wants to be supportive, his brain really does want to, but his heart…

“I’m fine.” He says in the end, low, void of emotions. “I heard you.”

Silence, again. Fujio said what he wanted to say, but Tsukasa had things to confess, too. Does it matter now?

His friend leans a little closer, waving his hand in his face. “You said you had something important to tell me, too, didn’t you? Do you want to tell me?”

No.

No, he doesn’t want to tell him now, even though he’s been struggling with himself for quite some time now, ever since he felt that shift in his emotions, ever since he felt that burn in his chest. He could ruin their friendship if he said it, big time, but keeping it inside wouldn’t do him any good, either.

Fujio is leaving, though. What’s the point of telling him now? It’s best if he doesn’t know, if he never knows, Tsukasa can’t do this. He’s a fool, stupid, for thinking that everything would magically work out in the end.

“It wasn’t anything important.” He answers, waves his hand as if trying to send an annoying fly away. “Tell me more. When are you leaving?”

No, it isn’t important.
