It was unfortunate that Narcissa’s favourite armchair also happened to be the one usually occupied by her husband. Halfway through the first term of the academic year, Draco was at school, leaving them alone together. Lucius lazed in the coveted armchair with a broadsheet newspaper, leaving only his fingers and legs visible. She stood at the bookcase, favourite book in hand. Despite the vast amount of furniture in the house, Narcissa had nowhere to sit. The window-seat proved too drafty this time of year and relocating herself to another part of the house seemed far too singular. Approaching the armchair, she made a point of peering over the top, vying for her husband’s attention. Lucius looked up at her, vaguely puzzled, but lowered the paper either way.

“Sorry, was there something you wanted?” There was an obvious tone of amusement in his voice; he knew she was after something, but this time he could not place it. His chin tilted upwards as he tried to translate the somewhat girlish smile that was developing. It didn’t particularly matter, she knew she was being a little juvenile, but he wouldn’t deny her. She knew that much.

“Perhaps,” she pushed aside his paper and, as gracefully as physically possible, sat sideways upon his lap, bringing her slipper-clad feet up underneath her. From the corner of her eye she saw her husband’s face switch from bewildered to disbelief, if not a little pained from her wriggling.

“Is that everything?” he shifted underneath her for the sake of his own comfort before settling again with an expression that lay somewhere between entertained and ‘my, aren’t we mature?’. Ignoring him temporarily, Narcissa rested her head against his shoulder, rather pleased with herself.

“Quite. Thank you.” She opened her book to the right page and began to read. Around her, the broadsheet opened again and a slightly devious smile found its way onto Lucius’ face.

“I’ve but one concern,” he said in a most convincing manner. He was answered by a puzzled frown as Narcissa looked up at him, but he chose to continue to ‘read’.

“Go on.”

“You must realise I’m not letting you out.”
