The road ahead was bare, the hour late. Chanyeol drove on. Streetlamps occasionally flashed light into through the car, illuminating it momentarily before fading back to gray. Without the radio on, the air was empty. Yet Chanyeol swore he could still hear Baekhyun’s soft laugh and blamed it for the constricting in his chest. Suffocating.

He pulled to a stop at a red light, the color washing over the car. His hand automatically rested on the space between the driver and passenger seats where Baekhyun would normally take it in his own. The leather just felt cold beneath his fingers.

Red became green and Chanyeol moved forward.  He followed the twists mechanically; he was without a set destination. He passed the fluorescent signs of stores that had already come to a close.

The road had begun to become slurred around him, but from blurry eyes he could still recognize his location. Driving here almost a thousand has carved the fence with the slightly broken board, the awkward lone garden gnome, and the chipping paint on the white front door deep into the very core of Chanyeol’s subconsciousness.

The wheel in his hands trembled so violently he was forced to pull to a stop.

The light at the top right window of the house was still on. Chanyeol’s heart jumped painfully in his chest. Baekhyun’s room. Half of him wanted to knock on the door, ask Baekhyun if he wanted to join him for a drive. But the selfish half of him wanted to drive onward, spare himself the pain of seeing the innocent gold ring around his best friends finger.

His greedy side took over as the key twisted in the ignition and his foot fell to the gas pedal.

The break was enforced as he heard the clicking sound of a door opening and a tired stammer of “Chanyeol?”

“What are you doing here so late?” Baekhyun approached the car.

“I went for a drive.” Chanyeol responded flatly, hoping his voice didn’t sound as broken to Baekhyun as it did to himself.

Baekhyun pulled the passenger door open and slid into the seat next to Chanyeol. Chanyeol’s eyes stayed on the empty road.

“You’ve been crying.” Baekhyun whispered, a certain worried tone in his voice that cut through Chanyeol’s heart strings. “What’s wrong, Chanyeol?” a soft hand found Chanyeol’s cheek and brushed the tears away, in turn making more tears appear.

“Please Don’t” Chanyeol pulled away, his cheek stinging where Baekhyun had touched him, “You don’t know what it means to me.”

Baekhyun bit his lip and dropped his hands to his lap. “I..Chanyeol, I don’t understand”

“Of course you don’t. You never have.”

“Wha-”

“Get out of the car.” Chanyeol ordered, finally looking Baekhyun in the eyes. All that looked back at him was confusion and hurt. Baekhyun worried a lip between his teeth, looking like he wanted to say something, but unsure about what exactly to say. Chanyeol felt the bile rise in his throat, “I can’t do it, Baekhyun. I just can’t.” He choked out before sobs wracked his body. “Please”

But Baekhyun had to make everything just that much more painful and confusing and instead of exiting the car he wrapped his arms around Chanyeol’s trembling shoulders and pulled him closer.
