Andy rushed through the hotel hall and managed to reach the elevator just before the door closed. He let his breath out and turned around to check himself in the mirror wall of the elevator, only to find out he was inside with David Ferrer and Gaël Monfils, both wearing suits and casually adjusting their ties.

"Hi, Andy!" Gaël said as if they've just met on the courts.

"So, I see you've finally made it!" David smirked. "No more lonely Valentine's Days, eh?"

Andy blinked.

"What are you..."

The elevator stopped and the door opened. Tomas Berdych in a suit which looked exactly like the one he wore for the Davis Cup ceremony walked in.

"Hey, guys!" he said and pushed the button with the number 4.

"Is everyone in this hotel?" Andy asked, visibly shocked.

"No!" Gaël said. "The ones who are single are not, obviously."

"Actually, I think I've just seen Almagro on his way down to the bar," Tomas grinned. "No way somebody would be dating that."

"He's with Soderling," David explained.

"Oh!" Tomas said. "But then anyways, I thought the same about Roddick but he's here. It was high time, who else in the world spent four consecutive Valentine's Days on his own?"

"Bridget Jones, maybe!" Gaël proposed, only to find the other guys staring at him in disbelief. "What? Gilles wanted to watch something funny last week!"

Tomas rolled his eyes and got of the elevator as it stopped in the fourth floor.

"Have a nice evening, guys."

When Andy opened the door of the suite, he found it empty. Not that he didn’t expect it. Marat was always so busy that he could easily forget his mother’s birthday, leave alone something like Valentine’s Day. And anyways, the message Andy got was sent by some of Marat’s assistants, not by Marat personally. He could have just told him to arrange it all and then forgotten about it. Or it could have been a joke and Marat didn’t even know about it. This Berdych was evil enough to play a joke like that.

Andy looked around the suite, then located the bar and opened it. If he was going to spend fifth Valentine’s Day in a row on his own, he wanted to do it in style.

Lights being turned on woke Andy up. He sat up straight (he at least though it was straight) on the bed and blinked into the light. Marat in a long black coat was inspecting the empty bottles.
“Oh… um… hi!” Andy said.

“You drank all these by yourself?” Marat asked.

“Yeah… well, I thought that…”

“That I wouldn’t come!” Marat finished for him. “Always so silly. Well, what about you having a cold shower while I check why the food hasn’t arrived?”

When Andy returned from the bathroom, a bit more sober, Marat was lighting the candles on the table. which was now set and full of food, apparently from a catering service.
“They messed up with the hour, anyways, at least it’s not cold!” Marat said, came to Andy and kissed him. “Happy Valentine’s Day, love!”

Andy smiled happily and sat at the table.

"I didn't hope for you to make it. You seem to be very busy with your politics."

"Well, you know, if I want to become the next president of Russia, I need to work hard."

"Yes, I saw a picture of you in the parliament."

"Really?"

"A picture of you yawning, actually."

"Well, it's not like partying in Las Vegas all the time!" Marat laughed.

“But I miss our partying very much,” Andy sighed.

“So do I. But mainly the nights after!” Marat smirked.

Andy didn’t know why, but he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable at the remark. “This is a nice suite!” he commented to take the conversation elsewhere.

“Yeah. Actually, I got it at last-minute. Lopez cancelled his reservation because apparently Verdasco cheated on him again.”

“Did he? Who with?”

“Bolelli. But we won’t talk about that now, will we?”

“No,” Andy whispered.

The conversation was weird, and Andy suddenly realized that he didn’t know how to talk to Marat, because they haven’t been talking like this, face to face, for so long. Marat got up from his chair, came to Andy and hugged him.

“Actually,” he said. “I would prefer if we didn’t talk at all tonight.”

And that was it. That was the moment when Andy felt perfectly happy. He knew that maybe next morning Marat would fly back to Russia and he’d be back chasing his dreams, now so different from the old ones about Grand Slams, titles, rankings, records. That he would again know his voice just from the telephone, and that the conversations would go back to voice messages and texts, like it was for months now. But for now, for the next few hours, Marat was going nowhere. He was right there. Next to him.
