only because i walked away from the interview yesterday afternoon a bit... disappointed. walked away thinking not only did i not care for this company that much but also i don't think they were all that impressed with me, either. just didn't get a good vibe. the first guy that i interviewed with was the president/coo of the company. from him, i ( Read more... )

Sounds like you were waiting for Hitler to pop out from behind the receptionist's desk too. Hold out for something better. :D

yeah, i should definitely hold out for something better. not that they are about to make an offer or anything!

um, they didn't even have a receptionist desk!!!!!! but if they did, i think i'd have expected chairman mao to jump out, instead. ;)

Sounds like bad cop/good cop. Maybe they were seeing how your people skills were. Maybe the dude is a jerk? My job before here was in Sunnyvale, right off 101. I worked in a high tech place in accounting while doing my MA. It was a Chinese company. Of course is not much of Silicon Valley Asian? For over a year I was the only white in my department...I loved it as I just returned from working with Chinese in Hong Kong for 15 years so it was very comfortable...

Sounds like a start up that you are applying for????

Well a bunch of my students were interviewed for an Exchange program to the states and none felt they did that well on the interview. I think they were fine.

I am sure you were fine as well! Maybe IT is picking up again? I was there during the crash--got a position right before it happenned and worked there until I graduated.

omigosh, how funny... the founder/ceo of the company was chinese! (ahem, nothing against you chinese folks out there!)

wow, you were in the bay area before you left! i worked in sunnyvale before, off mathilda on 101, too! in redwood city, as well, right off 101, again. i think i hate that freeway.

mostly start up companies are calling me back... i must seem resilient on my resume or something!

did i mention i left for central asia for almost 2 years right after i got laid off twice in a period of 6 months (back in early 2001)?

ooops, when I went to work I drove 20 miles toward SFO and turned off at Mathilda-not as far as Redwood--I was addressed in Sunnyvale. I worked for a company that made hi tech sensors. Before that I worked for a company that made satellite transceivers; also a Chinese company. The commute is not so bad when school is out and after all the layoffs. Before that it was horrid.

traffic on 101 is getting worse by the day... does this mean the economy is picking up again?????? ugh.

i dunno if i could work in an environment like that. i think cubicles are bad enough as it is, especially with neighbors who can't keep their f'ing voices down.

oh well, win some, lose some. i can't believe you've sent out so many resumés though.

me, neither... i've never looked so proactively... EVER! geesh, the job market is tough!

i've been spoiled the past year when i worked in my own private office with a door and a window! albeit, it did over look the parking lot...

yo. that environment sounds exceedingly startupy. i love how they like to minimize costs, but don't they realize that salaries are like by FAR the biggest cash expense?

anyway, go with what you're comfortable with...that's prob the best thing.

looking at their working conditions, it wouldn't surprise me if their salary range was on the lower end!

sad to say, if they offered me a position, i might have to take it... considering i really don't have any other options at this point!

how long are you willing to hold out for? i guess that's the key question....

errr.... a month? or two? maybe, not even that!

oh hey, did you decide on whether you're going to stay or go? your deadline is tomorrow!!

I'd hate to work at a place like that with no privacy at all. Sometimes you just don't want to look at anyone. You should hold off until you find a place/environment/people that you're comfortable with. It makes a whole lot of difference! I'm not thrilled with my job, but I have great co-workers, so working isn't that bad at all.
