'Offline' complexity in character build sound fine, as long as you can keep the number of calls down as you say.
Not what your post is directly about but:
What feel do you want the combat to have? Brutal / realistic, hollywood-esce, or something else? If people get shot, should they feel like lying down and not doing very much?
Do you really need 'extra body hit?' One of the defining features of riftworld (another wasted future larp) is that it doesn't have extra hits as an option to buy. It keeps the setting dangerous, even for 'high level' characters.
It's not really "about" anything, all of these Musings posts are just me throwing my thought processes onto the screen. The nearest thing to an actual question is the one about how to balance transient, temporary skill increases with genuine additions to a character
