Last night we had huge trouble getting Bethan to go to sleep, so at my wits end 2 hours after bedtime I settled her in with Cerys' suggestion that I explain the Large Hadron Collider to her. Talking about the giant loop of particle death led on to the subject of the Big Bang and the beginning of the universe, and she drifted off to sleep with me

I actually think it'd be a really good idea to teach particle physics to small children. Everyone absorbs Newtonian physics (to a certain extent) from an early age, which makes particle physics feel incredibly non-intuitive. To a certain extent this is probably unavoidable - it just *isn't* intuitive, at least not yet, but I suspect it might be a lot easier to grasp if introduced from an early age, before minds have gotten set into a Newtonian way of thinking. I could be wrong, but I think it would be interesting, at any rate.

That said, I suspect Bethan may not have grasped more than the 'bang' part of 'big bang theory' rather than entirely grasping the intricacies of string theory, hun... ;)
