He had two memories of her that he'd forgotten he had.
"Listen, I know who you are, and everyone does, really, so you should give up the act. I'm here to work hard and solve this, just like you."
That was what she said to him their first day working together, spitting her words out like she hadn't rehearsed them -- for once. Her chin tilted up and out, defiant, and he noticed her left eye twitched slightly on the down syllables -- here to solve this, like you. He'd always remember that the first thing he liked about her was that she thought Voldemort could be "solved" and that she looked like she could have kicked his ass.
"You were the girl with the toad," is what he said after a pause. She stilled and licked the corner of her mouth, something clicking almost audibly in the sanctum behind her eyes.
"Neville had the toad. I had the troll."
They eyed each other. Harry thought she definitely looked like she could take a troll. He imagined her at eleven with that same hair and those same slightly large front teeth and found out he liked her for a third reason.
A/N: The gist at first was: What if they never went to save Hermione from the troll & she was hurt or pulled out of school? What if Harry was never loved at Hogwarts? What if they became Aurors after they'd growed all up? What can I possibly do to set up a Mulder/Scully? I may continue with this at some point.
