Darth Maul Not Dead? The Clone Wars Opens Pandora's Box

Mar 11, 2012 22:03

By suggesting that Darth Maul survived his duel with Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars and the novel The Wrath of Darth Maul create a very uncomfortable dilemma for fans. I'm not sure the people who came up with the idea grasped what kind of Pandora's box it opens ( Read more... )

Well, if you take all of the EU as canon, Palpatine's spirit survived and then inhabited a clone body. Personally, I pick and choose my canon and don't consider canon anything that goes against movie canon. But some people consider that canon.

I agree that having Maul survive was a bad idea. I think they got excited by the prospect of bringing back his character and didn't really think things through.

Although, Sidious might have electrocuted himself. And there was that whole dark side explosion. So that may have kept him dead even if the reactor shaft didn't.

I don't. The Clone Wars is "officially" (i.e by Lucas and Lucasfilm) considered more canon than the EU, so this is more problematic.

I haven't seen the episodes. After seeing that it is a mechanical Maul, I lost interest. It would have been a hell of a lot more interesting if Darth Sidious resurrected Maul in completion using the powers of the dark side.

I'm getting the impression that Maul manages to come back from the dead on his own? Which doesn't make sense.

WARNING: SPOILER

The explanation in The Wrath of Darth Maul is that Maul doesn't come back from the dead - he never died. He grabbed an air vent with the Force to stop his fall, holding onto life through the power of his hate, will to survive, and desire for revenge. I'm sure the Emperor in ROTJ didn't lack any of these things.

I was pondering the same thing. How they could have bring Darth Maul back. It was kind of weird seeing him like that. Even Obi Wan had a surprised look on his face when Yoda said Darth Maul was alive.

George Lucas okayed the idea, though.

Saying he never died pisses me off, whether it is canon or EU. It cheapens the duel in TPM and Obi-Wan's accomplishment of defeating a Sith (while he was still a Padawan I will add).

I have been putting off watch the episodes on my DVR because I am so livid.

Like, WTF! Dead is dead. Force or no Force, getting cut in half will make you dead! UGHHAGAHHAHAH!

I can understand why they did it - Maul is popular with TCW's target audience, teenage boys, and in a kids' show, realism is far from the main concern. It's too bad for us adult fans. Obi-Wan and Asajj Ventress fighting together against Maul is a scenario I would like to see; it remains to be seen if I'll be able to enjoy it despite the little detail that HE'S BEEN DEAD FOR A DECADE, WTF.

That would be the only upside. But I see it as fanfiction because like you said, "HE'S BEEN DEAD FOR A DECADE, WTF."

Another change for fans to discuss. :) (Strictly speaking, it doesn't contradict the movie canon, but yes, most were made to believe Maul died.) And as with any change there are three options for fans: first, decide that the change is meaningless, second, decide that the change can have meaning and try to find that meaning - just for fun, if for nothing else, and third, ignore the change ( ... )
