2 things 1. My name actually *is* Madeline, so I loved those books!
2. Madeline isn't actually in an orphanage. It's a boarding school. In the book where Madeline needs her appendix out, her father sends her presents (nice dad, huh??) in the hospital! I always thought she was an orphan too until someone pointed that out to me!
From Wikipedia: A frequent misconception in the series, especially among those new to the book (or the cartoon) is that the girls were in an orphanage. Contrary to popular belief, Madeline is not an orphan as evidenced by her father's gifts when she is in the hospital getting her appendix removed. The girls are in a boarding school, not an orphanage. As well, Yvette once received long black gloves from a relative in Ohio, and she and her aunt went shopping for Cliché designer wear. The film, however, portrays Madeline as an orphan, but her residence is still a boarding school.
Hehe, whoops! I must sound like such a n00b. I was literally obsessed with those books as a kid, I must have overlooked that her dad sent her gifts while in the hospital. OHYEAH! She goes home for Christmas! (This just occurred to me, just now). Wow. I loved it when she got her appendix out. My mom would draw a "stitch scar" on my tummy in Sharpie when I was little because I wanted to be "just like Madeline". Hee!
I used to pretend I was Madeline too! I had this little blue dress and beaten-up black shoes that I would wear around the house to play Madeline with. I even had this plastic yellow dish that I would tie a ribbon around and wear like a hat.
I still have the computer games, too! Although, they're DOS based and run on Windows 98 I still keep them for memories' sake.
