what?

This past Friday, Jenny Wood was verbally attacked on UCLA Radio by an opposing USAC president, who wished to "smash her face into the ground." At the Speak Out, hecklers wore "FUCK Students Power!" T-Shirts, and calling a Students Power! supporter a "chink" who should "go back to the fields."It's sad, really, that such thought can exist here at ( Read more... )

hey scott, i randomly stumbled onto your lj from joyces friends. wow, i didnt know racial stereotyping was such a big petpeeve of yours. but you gotta admit, incidents like this one are understandable since asians themselves talk alot of shit concerning other ethnicities. i believe to truly prevent shit like this, we ourselves have to stop talking trash. but you know thats never gonna happen.

i agree with you that we need to stop racial stereotypes ourselves before anything can truly happen. however, that idea (idealistic i know) is a long term one. what do you do in the short term? ignore it? i think every little bit counts. so in this case, even just making it known to these guys that what was said was not right would have been a step in the right direction.

Well said. We are nothing but hypocrites if we tell others to stop talking trash when we don't stop ourselves. I'm sure most asians talk trash about the mexicans, blacks and even white people. So how can we blame other races for talking shit about us asians? It's sad but this is how the society works.

These comments show stereotyping of asians by asians. I find it offensive how the people who've made this comments feel that they have the power to say asians as a collective group are "nothing but hypocrites" and hate on other ethnicities. I myself am asian and I do not hate other ethnicities, nor do I have asian friends who do this(not seriously at least). You guys may talk trash and say racist things about other cultural groups, but please don't shackle other asians into these stereotypes.

i dunno what kind of naive perspective of the world you have, but what jackofalltrades said is pretty fucking true.

Oh yeah, I will bet that you have never even lived outside of california for any good amount of time and experienced asian americans in other places. How about in Europe? Canada? Japan? Texas? Get some worldly experience before you make bold assumptions. All the asians in the world aren't the same as the relatively few and limited amount you've encountered. And sure, I'd agree that our parent's generation has a good majority of racists. But we're in the 21st century now and that ignorant attitude toward other races is no longer a majority with this new generation and the generations to come.

It's a sad truth that there are Asians out there who condone the stereotypes of other minorities, or even stereotypes of themselves. [It just reminds me of how the whole "model minority" term was created to separate us.] We shouldn't even be fighting one another, that's just one more group that we shouldn't need to fight against, we should help each other because we are fighting for the same cause; to challenge the words that have such negative connotation towards us all ( ... )
