"if an artist draws something without any message behind it in mind, yet his audience believes that a message does exist, does that message itself have any grounds?"
I've been thinking about that a lot lately. My lcc friend Robbie was laughing one day about how people just keep asking him stuff about his scripts like "What is the meaning behind the ____ character?" and he honestly has no clue, he just writes whatever the hell he feels like writing. I've even started that Jackie Chan script i told you about, and i have the ending mostly figured out-- but somehow i still don't really know the meaning behind it (the ending) myself.
The whole question reminds me of Donnie Darko. There's this fat asian girl character in it who has her own really weird subplot that i never quite understood. On the commentary track, writer/director Richard Kelly even admits that he still hasn't figured out the purpose of the character and her subplot. Knowing that just makes me doubt that there's any point to it at all. But oh well, to each his own.
i read about Mark Mcgowan... MOCA has a piece by him in their exhibit right now. You should come visit! These "what is art" discussions always seem to arise during gallery tours and such.
