i've lost faith in our justice system.our "governator" decided to not grant clemency to Stanley Williams, the co-founder of the Crips. He's been on death row for more than a decade for killing four people, of which to this day he claims innocence. I'm sure at this point you're thinking he deserves the death penalty. Of all people, the guy who co- ( Read more... )

this guy has done the most anyone can probably do in regards to trying to redeem himself. even so, you believe he should die? so what you're saying is there is no need of redemption in our system because that's how justice should be?

i understand where you're coming from, but do you think our system works fine the way it is right now?

How can you redeem someone when they can't even accept what they have done.

So I took this Self and Society class this past quarter, and we read this one article about a professor who has taught for 20+ years and had become a lot of his students' favorite professor in their college career, which shows how much of a difference he has made in their lives. And then the university found out that he was a murderer in the past, and they decided to fire him ( ... )

The man has tried, successfully to some degree, to right the wrongs he committed. He has by all accounts completely turned his life around. But he has been convicted of four counts of murder. Can all of the good he accomplished later in life make up for the deaths that the justice system lays at his feet? I don't think so. Ultimately, we all must make an account of the things we have done ( ... )

In your post you bring up the subject of redemption and how this man has atoned for his crimes, thus earning him clemency. Yet how can Stanley Williams truly be redeemed when he has never accepted responsibility for the crimes that imprisoned him in the first place? True he has done a lot of good, and yes I am basing my whole argument on the assumption that his conviction was correct, but I think your on a slippery slope when you call out arnie for refusing to grant mercy on an unrepentant murderer who ultimately found a positive purpose in his twilight years. Justice means different things to different people, and I don't begrudge governor arnie for his decision even though I personally disagree with it.

if he has maintained his innocence, why would he accept responsibility for the four murders?

well thats the whole problem isn't it. he wants to maintain his innocence while simultaneously proving that he has achieved redemption. this idea is inherently problematic, don't you think - as what exactly does an innocent man have to atone for? you had said this guy had done the most anyone can probably do to redeem himself -- except admit his mistakes (murder) and seek forgiveness for them. redemption sounds a little hollow when you can't even do that first step.

he seeks redemption for creating the Crips, not for the murder. He has maintained innocence for the murder, but has apologized for ever creating the Crips.

Despite all the good work he has done, he stilled killed 4 people. Also if he's granted clemency, what's there to stop other death row inmates from doing the same thing? You can't set a precedent for something like this...
