Party Animal

Tonight was my friend's parents's annual cookie party. Because I was feeling shy and a bit anti-social, I somehow appointed myself chief dough roller and cookie cutter. I absolutely hate going to parties by myself and will avoid it unless absolutely necessary, or unless I know a lot of the people there. Your strategy sounds like a good one, though of course it only works at a party where you already know the hosts very well.

Heh. Actually, one of my friends (affectionately nicknamed "Party Machine") was notorious for showing up at parties with a posse of 10+ people, only one of whom might have been legitimately invited to the party. His technique was to make for the keg and start pouring and handing out beers. It almost always worked. At least for the first round or two. Act like you belong and are in charge, and most people won't question you. (It made for some awkward exits, but, hey, there was always another party to crash.)

I am very fond of finding a task to do at a party. It's an automatic conversation starter, and if nobody's talking to me right then, my inner junior-high kid doesn't get all anxious and decide that We Are a Big Loser Whom Everyone Hates.
