Character Name: Czernobog. Though if you need a last name: Black God
Character Series: American Gods
Character Age: Technically, centuries old. Looks to be in his 50's at the moment. Possibly older.
Background:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gods and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobog (There are many alternate spellings, but in American Gods he is Czernobog). Czernobog came to America when a Slavic cult brought him here in their worship and legends. They made sacrafices to him and during that time he was their god.
They are gone but he still exists, living a nearly mundane though quasi immortal life. He was a "knocker", a man who knocks down cows before they are butchered for meat. He lived off a pension, after that, and stayed with three other mythological entities in Chicago.
His time is Fall and Winter. All bad things are in his domain and all suffering should be cursed in his name.
His other half, Beilbog, is the "White God" is his brother. Though in American Gods, Beilbog is revealed just the other half of Czernobog. His time is Spring and Summer.
(I will not be bringing Beilbog in, due to his limited canon.)
Personality: Czernobog is a strange mix of person and god. As the god of all things that go wrong in the world, you'd expect him to be more cruel and evil. Instead he is an old man, one who enjoys his games and misses the time he was feared and worshiped. He keeps a lot of what he was worshiped as with him, even if he lives out his life as an old man.
He likes games. He's a god and is bound by the deals he makes. Though he also expects others to be bound by them as well. His games are not always nice. A game of checkers for your life is just one example. Win, and you have him right where you want him. Lose, and you get to see the darker part of him.
That part of him that is the god Czernobog is cruel and evil. His weapon is his hammer, the tool used for his sacrifices by his cult. He enjoys killing with it, it reminds him of when he was strong and the times were good for him. He enjoyed using it as a butcher, killing cows with one strong, skillful blow. He waits for the chance to use it again, to spill blood and end life.
He also accepts that he is all things bad. People cursed their dark fates and those they hate in his name. He tells Shadow, in the book, "I am cancer..." He would gladly accept being blamed for terrible deeds. It's faith and belief, along with sacrafice, that empowers the gods and he could use a little more of that. He reminisces a lot about when people worshiped him.
He's also an old man. He seems to have accepted, in part, that he is fading. He knows that US of America is a bad place for gods, and says so often to the others. He is trying to accept his life as it is now. He gets to be retired, living with three women who cook and clean. Just bringing in a pension and just existing at this point. He's full of advice at times and some wisdom that he enjoys sharing. He also has some insight into things and vocalizes that often enough.
So, until he makes mention of darker things, he does appear to be just a grumpy, sometimes silly, old man. His accent is questionably Eastern European and he could be some kids grandfather if not for the near inability to have children. He can easily be that old man, angry about kids on his lawn, or that old guy with a newspaper on a park bench, ignoring the world and muttering about the days past. Sometimes he is that man. And the world moves on without knowing his history.
He is aware of other gods, patheons and beliefs but most of them are older. The newer "gods" throw him off, chances are he met most of the older ones in his time in the states. The newer ones just keep springing up and he cannot find the need to care about them. Their time will come and go as well. Which seems to fit with him being an old man as well. Not caring about new technology and knowing that the next new thing will one day be outdated and discarded.
Abilities: His abilities are pretty vague in the book.
>>Gain youth, health and strength from sacrifices/worship.
>>See omens of misfortune on people.
>>Minor tricks like changing how he looks, slightly, and fooling the mind.
