we're just trying to become a love story.
written in a series of drabbles that can stand alone or together.
one
He’s careful by nature, likes to take his time with his decisions, likes to think things through. Mostly, Dongwoo thinks this is a good thing, but sometimes everything happening around him seems to go at hurricane speed and before he realises it he’s missed something. It happens, especially considering the company he keeps and the industry he’s in.
He smiles and looks at their faces rather than their discretely joined hands. He smiles and tells himself he’s happy for them, even if the bitterness that comes tastes and feels so much more natural. He tells himself: he missed his chance.
two
Second chances are rare, but not obsolete. He doesn’t allow himself to hope though; he’s too careful for that and hoping for near impossible things lead to disappointment. That’s why it catches him off guard.
Suddenly he’s scrambling, rushing himself to match Jinyoung’s pace. He ends up standing in front of Jinyoung, fishing for words that are drowned out by his heartbeat. It’s not the time for caution, it’s not the time to think. He can’t let his second chance go-he’s slow, not stupid.
“I like you.”
Suddenly the world is too slow. He waits for an answer, impatient.
three
What took him so long, Dongwoo finds himself wondering some days. It’s bliss, short moments of bliss that they sneak in the small gaps in their schedule.
He still falls asleep on the couch when Jinyoung stays up to compose. Jinyoung shakes Dongwoo awake (he wakes up to his blurry smile) and they layer themselves over each other on the couch and just fall asleep together like that.
He thought things would change, that things would break. They still could, but those thoughts are far, far away when they’re together like this. Later, he wakes up to Jinyoung’s blurry smile.
four
He thinks they’re broken. He isn’t really used to arguing, especially not with Jinyoung, but it happens. He’s sure it happened when they were just friends as well, but right now he can’t remember any of the instances to reassure himself.
The tension is noticeable to all of them. Dongwoo forces himself not to shrug Chansik’s hand off when he squeezes his shoulder, in an attempt to comfort. Across the room Junghwan is sitting with Jinyoung, close, thigh to thigh. It makes him feel a wave of nausea (jealousy).
When Jinyoung tries to catch his gaze Dongwoo looks away quickly.
