All sp. ed. students have IEPs - individualized education programs - with specific learning goals. Things like doing double digit addition with carrying with a success rate of 70% when given 10 problems by November 15th. I think he's just a better student and a faster learner than he was getting credit for. When left to his own devices, he'll flip through his flashcards. And after I go through the cards with him, quiz him, and explain them he asks how he's doing. He really wants to improve and he's getting so good so fast.
