Last night before bed, I asked that my unconscious give me an obviously symbolic dream, instead of the long and complicated heroic quest adventures it usually specializes in. Ever compliant, it responded with this:

Do you at all believe in the animal-spirit thing? If you do, it seems that maybe cougar is choosing you. Or it could be a huge "face your fears" message. It's really interesting that it didn't back away when you reached to pet it, and seemed to become more predatory as your fears increased. It's also interesting that your desire to reach out and touch it was so strong, in spite of your fear.
It does remind me of several shamanic accounts of animals being predatory until they were faced. Now that you're awake, what do you imagine you would do if the situation happened again?
Lots to think about anyway.
