i have that exact same obsessive-compulsive symmetry thing too, and will often repeat things in the same manner as you describe. it was at its most extreme in high school when i wouldn't leave the house until i was satisfied that my hair was perfectly symmetrical on both sides. sometimes it would take me so long that my arms would be aching. failure to create perfect hair symmetry caused me so much anxiety that i would cry and refuse to go to school.
and ditto to the small dark spaces thing, too! blanket forts are the best, and when i was a kid my favourite place to sleep was in a corner of the living room that was obscured by a chair. i'd curl up behind there with a blanket and pillow. i felt so much more secure than in my bed.
