Don't like much his installations either... however, the stills from the Cremaster movies are gorgeous photography.
As for other sources of imagery, I remember the Museum of Pathological Anatomy in Wien had a remarkable collection of skeleton deformities and unusual pathologies (first x-ray burns, in example) as Wien was a sort of main attraction for that type at the turn of the last century. I have a coffe table book on the museum's exhibits and some of the photographs are quite artistical.
Erwin Olaf, perhaps? Did quite a lot of commercial work but privately did a bunch of good stuff too...
