That is so interesting to me. I always find it fascinating to see how artists think about things.

My sister is the exact opposite - she works in oil pastels and after a long, long hiatus, charcoal. She is currently working on a fascinating series done in charcoal - if you're interested I'll post a link.

I think the only way to get better at painting is just dive in, but I'm probably talking out of my hat!

Nah, just diving in is as good a method for learning as any. Mostly I'm just so tired when I get home at the end of the day that it's hard to find time to do art work. I got some watercolors though, so expect to see more wobbly paintings of bikes on here. ;)
