I'm not familiar with the Eragon books, but I do know that American fantasy publishers throw around terms like "As significant as the lord of the rings." pretty casually. Fantasy fans also seem fairly prone to obsessive devotion to the books they like, so its hard to know if the books are any good without actually reading them yourself.
I will say that although I like John Malkovich he appears to make a piss poor evil king, and the plot as outlined by the trailer seems to be the totally formulaic unlikely farm boy discovering he is the chosen one who can take down an evil empire of Star Wars, Dune, Wheel of Time, etc. etc. Which is primarily formulated to give the alienated teenage boys, who are the primary purchasers of fantasy novels, the power fantasies that amuse them.
That said it's got a dragon in it so I'll probably rent it once its on DVD.
I'm pretty much in agreement with you here Karass.. I mean seriously when you hear the names John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons mentioned in a film project, you think that your pretty much guarunteed solid, dependable performances from them.... Unfortunately here, it looks like Mr Malkovich and Mr Irons are going to fall WAAAAY short of their usual high standrads. =/
This could be yet another dissapointing, LotR/CoN wannabe film, hoping to cash in on the huge success of those two novel to movie ventures.
Yes, I know, only half a year late to the party, but I couldn't resist this chance to quote one of my favorite movie-reviews of all time...
"If Tolkien is sensimilla, and Brooks (Shannara) is skunkweed, then Eragon is a stale bag of herbal tea. Soaking in lukewarm water. In a styrofoam cup. In a dentist's waiting room."

I'm not confident it'll be very well scripted, but if that director does anything like his other work, it'll look really pretty. Whee!
