2009: Year of the Fighting Game

Aug 14, 2009 17:25

Sure, it's all to easy to whine about the complete overdose of SHOOTANS and DAKKA in our current videogame generation, what with a console *built specifically for* a genre of game and the total sales domination of FPS blockbusters like Modern Warfare or dare I say it, Halo. No offense to either of these games (although Halo 2's ending was a ( Read more... )

Nrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg.

GG always kinda raped me sideways, but I've thought of giving BB a shot. First off though; Touhou Hisoutensoku.

I've heard similar reactions to BlazBlue from a lot of other people: it flew in under the radar but turned out to be one of the best 2D fighters to appear in quite some time. I'm not much into the fighter games, but even I've been tempted to pick this one up.

I fully endorse BB as GG's spiritual successor (and, in some cases, it actually IS GG in the future, if you believe the rumor boards) and there is supposed to be some new content (new characters and moves for people) for it to be released when Europe gets the game in December or January. I suspect it'll be a free update for everyone else.

And I have never been a big fan of the SF series, and I have played SF4 and I do find it intimidating. Then again, I've been spoiled by GG's air recovery and BB's unique movesets for people. And I do have fun being Noel and comboing people in the corner for 5k+ damage with no option to escape.

And don't taunt the unknown people with Bang's Fu-Rin-Ka-zen.

SF4 is the place to enter. It's not hard, and the barrier of entry is pretty low, but playing against someone who's old enough to remember SF2 definitely means you're gonna get raped. Still, for depth, it's second to no other fighting game, and is absolutely amazing to watch at high levels.

BB has a tendency to devolve into poke poke special combo poke distortion, but every character plays differently enough to void those comparisons, because the moves work so well together, as opposed to GG which was so insanely combo heavy that getting caught in one alone probably meant getting looped.

(if you play noel, learn to 6C combo, spamming D will get you punished. A lot.)

I agree in that SF4 is a lot easier in terms of entry than earlier incarnations - especially SF2 - but I still feel that I have to spend more time on it to find the proper combos for a character than I do with BB.

And as for Noel, I've got to work on her 6C combo more, mainly on the throw whiff action. One of my favorite combos is 5A x2-4 > 2C, and then I either go into 3C > (22C)x2 or 2D > 5A > 6B > 6A > 236D (or 236236D with 50% heat). It may not be a 'safe' combo, but it hits for almost 5k damage. And I agree with you on what BB can boil down to, but the uniqueness of all the characters helps void it out.

I do have her BC > 214A combo down pretty well though, even though throws are easy to break out of and not a 'recommended' tactic.
