A/N: A short, sappy thing I wrote for a writing contest. Also, a big, special thanks to
Muse Lord Mai-chan for letting me use her idea and not biting my head off for it.
Disclaimer: The various characters of NARUTO belong to Masashi Kishimoto, not me. (Though I don't need this)

While the rest of the world is asleep, he is alone, watching this wide expanse of ocean.
He should join them, but he cannot. So each night, comes to this place, letting the sound of the waves wash him into a state of sleep-like calm, but it is still not sleep.
As he rests, he begins notice the perpetual rhythm of the waves and how it is so different to the ephemeral sand dunes behind him, blown by the freezing wind. It is like life, his life, so impermanent when they can be ended with a single moment of unawareness.
But the ocean is different. It is his death, so familiar, yet so unknown at the same time, as he comes here every day, but he still knows nothing about what is in front of him. But if he just moves a little bit forwards, not being able to swim, he would know.
Then he wouldn’t have to feel the cold anymore.
No. That would never happen. The sand is far too attached to him.
But if he fights against it, like how he does every time with the urge to destroy, perhaps he would drift with the waves and arrive somewhere across the sea, somewhere where everyone (even him) is treated like humans and not like tools. Would that be the afterlife…?
Those thoughts are blown away when he hears the footfalls of people coming towards him, announcing themselves too loud to be assassins.
“Hey, are you cold?” says the husky voice of his older sister, and then his older brother says, “We brought blankets.”
As he feels the warm fabric drape over his body and the pair of arms pulling him closer, he knows that the afterlife can wait.
