I tried feudalism.

A plan where one person owned a lot of land, and the people who lived there had to work for him. In return, he kept them safe. Sometimes, he would give little parts of his land to men who promised to fight for him and give him things when he told them to. Then the people who lived there would work for that guy.

It's like explaining something to someone very young. Or dim. Or who's new to speaking English.

Yeah; I figured parents would be pretty good at this. Keeping it simple but not being condescending is an art form. :)
