I feel your pain. I spent two months searching for a reasonable place that would accept me & my dog in either the west end or near commercial for under a thousand....
...I ended up moving in with my boyfriend instead. Which, of course, there's NO way I'd be able to afford if he didn't own the place. hah.
i like the no ceiling just beams thing because you can hang shit from up there, and i like hanging shit :)
god damn dude. i have a 2 story town house and it is $485 a month in knoxville tn. not the newest appliances or electrical system, but it is pretty darn huge for the price. it was a pretty good find after a couple of months of looking.
you should try posting a "looking for an apartment" ad on craigslist and see if anyone has any ideas.
trust me the suspension possibilities entered my mind...not to mention the fun bathtub parties I could through. sadly the rest of it was just too crappy
Jesus, that's terrible. Darlene and I just last summer gave up the lease on our place on Beach Avenue in the West End (we'd been subletting it for the last 5 years). A beautiful 1200 sq.ft. 2 bedroom facing the beach for $1375. Of course once the sublet tenants took over the rent immediately went up to $1700.
I have a friend here in New Orleans who just rented a place much like yours for $450, so there's still bargains to be had (although pre-Katrina it probably would have gone for $300). Of course there are downsides, like the crackhouse on the corner and the guy who got shot dead in her backyard a week after she moved in.
Have you considered looking at some shared space? It's the only way I afford eating things other than rice in Barca. And so far has been surprisingly good.

Sin: I'll be there! It's my birthday, too. :)
