Rant on the dumbth of humanity.

Just a brief rant with little connection to anything, in lieu of the actual reasoned post about some aspect of my life that I ought to be writing instead...

The topic of the day is "allergies". People of t3h int4rwebz, words mean things. An allergic reaction is the response of your body's immune system to a foreign substance that it's mistakenly ( Read more... )

Uh well actually I do have food allergies - wheat, corn, peanuts. The big ones for people of European descent. Before I knew I had these allergies I would, on occasion writhe on the floor in agony and no one new why. After 3 years of all kinds of intestinal tests, I went to an allergist on a whim. He said that I could be allergic, or sensitive to wheat, corn, and peanuts. After eliminating these foods from my diet my colitis went away in 24 hours. The only time it has come back is when I ate a lot of wheat, corn, and peanuts. Well serves me right. In fact, I just had a wheat filled weekend and am sneezing and hacking like crazy. So yes, some people might be over reating - I certainly don't have celiac sprue - but I do waaaay better health wise when I stay away from the big three.

But damn they are tasty!!!

That means you count as "Big Win" on a number of counts: (1) you've had the actual symptoms, (2) you've actually gone to an allergist, (3) you've logically identified the ingredients that cause you problems, and (4) they're all entirely plausible ingredients that people often have allergies to. Hooray for you! (For having exactly the right attitude, anyway; I'm sorry about not getting to enjoy everything you might like to eat! I'm lucky beyond measure for having had my childhood allergies go away when I hit puberty. Till then, it was no dairy and seasonal hearing loss, among other things...)

It may stretch the imagination, but a great many of the allergy stories on the LJ cooking communities fail on every one of those points. It's a vast world of "yesterday I ate a ham sandwich and forty Snickers bars and then I threw up on the roller coaster so I think maybe I am allergic to pork and so give me recipes for ham without pigs in it now please."

Hee hee hee hee hee!! Oh otter, yes! Just thinking about a roller coaster ride makes me throw up!! And hey, the ham sandwich could have gone bad. :)

One needs to test allergies. And hey, it can be tough. My allergy symptoms would appear out of no where. I think now it depended on how much of each substance was in my body. (Like me be sneezy pants over hear due to wheat.) But yes, what you are describing is much silliness!

Plus lucky you for growing out of your allergies!!! OMG I wish! My allergist looked at my results, looked at me and said "You are allergic to the world!"
