All the local media had been broadcastin both along with a warning to stay off the roads unless absolutely nessicary so they could plow and salt them effectively. so what happens? apparenlty ( Read more... )

Actually this was the first time I can remember it happening here. we've had worse storms, but not the problems like this time. Seemed to be because it was in places that usually didn't get it as bad got it worse this time.

Though I'm told the 6 inches of sleet were the main problem not the 5 to 12 inches of snow.

Yeah...snow's not that bad really - in some places it actually gives -more- traction once you get used to it, if it's fresh and hasn't been packed down too badly (thou it does tend to "pull" a bit)...sleet causes things to turn to glare ice. Sleet's what got me off the road in Sadie >.<;.

Huh yeah, just so you know sleet, freezing rain, two forms of black ice, and ultra slick thin coatings of wet snow are very common here. That doesn't really phase much. Snow does offer better traction if it is more then an inch or so, but past 6 inches what we get here tends to either try to hold you or just shove you off the road. In this case the main problem was the 6 inches of sleet were on top of about 4 inches of snow and it pretty much fused into a block that was hard to move by plow or shove so tires didn't have much of a prayer pushing through it and the snow under it kept then from being able to ride on top of it. made for really good car and semi fly paper it seems.
