No one knows what he is. An angel, an alien, maybe a bored ancient god. However, everyone in the city does know that all of the decisions he has them make have consequences.
"It's very simple," he tells each of the people that have been taken at an opportune -- or less-than-opportune -- moment from their timelines, "what I would like you to do is make one decision." Waving vaguely at the star-encrusted expanse of space beyond the window behind him, the angle of light (or lack thereof) obscures all but his silhouette.
You have been taken from your place in the universe at a critical junction in your life, one at which any path you choose will cause dramatic results no matter what. Perhaps not immediately, but in the future, certainly. Presented with your own situation from an outside perspective, as well as with the potential decisions you can make, you are asked to consider your answer wisely. No matter what you are asked to decide, however, you must be very careful with your logic. While taking one route will do this, it will also do that... and it is much the same for every other path you may be able to move yourself along -- the process is fairly cut-and-dry, it seems.
Of course, you're not forced to make a decision on the spot. Making hasty choices often leads to doing something you will regret, he claims. So to begin, you are deposited in a small sanctuary city of sorts, with a tiny population and nothing outside it but a stretch of long, infinite abyss of sky and space, and told to take as much time as you need to make your choice.
This is the last you hear from this man.
Stuck in a foreign, apparently middle-of-nowhere place with the ambience of a space colony by someone's supposedly-benevolent action to give you a chance to truly consider your options before you make an important decision, one that could potentially change or ruin your life forever, you have nowhere to go and no way to contact the one who apparently watches over the events that take place in the city.
Events that over time may very well make anyone question what their purpose of being here is at all.
