About the flatbed: Standard, these days, at least for smaller scanners. The other option is a *drum* (Trommelscanner), where the original is dragged over a cylinder instead of being put to bed, flatly ;-).
The "funny" aspect is that they seem to find it necessary to spell this out so proudly (and wrongly), since it's shape is probably the first thing any idiot will notice on encountering their product :-p. But it used to be quite the innovation, back then in the dark ages...
