Who: Arianna, Dawn, and Billy
What: Couch movie time/thoughts voiced
When: Late at night, a while back.
Where: Dawn's apartment
Why: Because no internet = boredom = randomness such as this.
Dawn was pretty sure one of them was going to move eventually. It was just a matter of who, and when.
They had just finished watching Pirates of the Carribean, and Arianna had fangirled Orlando Bloom to death, and Dawn had gotten giggly over Johnny Depp, and Billy had mentioned once or twice how it wouldn’t be bad to get Keira Knightley into bed, but past that, he wasn’t sure.
And this was the end of the nine hour movie marathon they’d just had together, so they were all exhausted. Billy was half asleep on the end of the couch, Arianna was half sleeping on him, and Dawn was half sleeping on her. The usual set up, with only minor variations every now and again.
One of them had to get up. They were at Dawn’s, and Billy and Arianna had already said they weren’t going to crash. They had to be home. Things to do in the morning, no impromptu sleepovers tonight. Which sucked, she liked having them over as much as possible. She got so bored by herself.
And when Dawn got bored, Dawn thought about things. And with no one here, she had no one to discuss them with. And then what could one do with these thoughts? Aside from think about them some more. And for all the world knew, she could come up with this fantastic and utterly Earth shattering thing, and no one would know. Because no one was there to hear her talk about it.
People were missing out, they just didn’t know it.
Speaking of thinking of things…
Dawn yawned faintly, setting off a chain reaction of faint yawns from the other two, but that didn’t spawn any movement. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see how comfortable Billy and Arianna looked sleeping on each other.
It was kind of cute, actually. They usually looked cute together. She’d never been sure if this was in a friend way, or a something else way, but it was cute just the same. There wouldn’t be a ‘something else’ way though, technically, because they’d never dated. Never even brought up the possibility, actually.
And why was that? They were all friends. Would it make it weird? Dawn didn’t know. But now she was curious. Why weren’t they dating? They could try one date, and then, maybe that would set up a chain reaction of other dates. Domino effect. Ending with marriage or… something. Maybe nothing. Maybe everything.
Above all else… There was definitely maybe something.
Why was she keeping this quiet?
“Hey!” Dawn sat up in her spot on the couch, turning to the other two. “You guys should date!”
The outburst scared Arianna so bad that her hand snapped up and smacked Billy square in the face as she sat up, causing him to let out a noise of surprise and jump so badly, he went over the end of the couch and hit the floor.
There was absolute silence as Dawn beamed in semi-embarrassed amusement, and Billy sat up slowly, staring at her with Arianna in a joint look of tired confusion.
“Sorry.” She grinned. “But seriously. You guys should date. I was just thinking about it and…”
“What did I tell you about thinking?” Billy groaned out and rubbed his head, getting to his feet. “Ouch, Arianna.”
“Sorry.” She muttered, rubbing her eyes. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” He grumbled, sitting back down next to Arianna and yawning loudly. “I think I knocked out the idea for my sculpture that I was sort of dreaming about.” He rested his head on Arianna’s shoulder. “I can’t see it anymore.”
“Sorry.” She mumbled again, resting her head on his and closing her eyes.
Dawn stared at them, and wondered why she hadn’t thought of this sooner. “So why aren’t you dating, huh?”
“How did you go from the idea of marshmallow mattresses being interesting to sleep on earlier, to this?” Arianna looked over at her, frowning at her friend in tired exasperation. “We’re tired. You should be tired. Go to bloody bed.” She was breaking out the British slang to underscore her irritation, but it didn’t bother Dawn any.
“I’m not tired anymore.” She shrugged. “And I was just thinking.”
“You think…” Billy yawned, removing himself from Arianna as he got up, and grabbing his keys off the coffee table. “Too much.” He finished, and then nudged Arianna. “Come on, I’ll drive you home.”
She nodded and pulled herself off the couch, giving Dawn a wave as she stumbled for the door. “I’ll see you at work. Don’t forget to tell Harry I’ve got to babysit.”
“I will.” Dawn waved back, and then nodded to Billy. “See you later?”
“Yep.” He nodded back, and headed out with Arianna, walking down to the car with her. “She’s such a trip.” He rubbed his eyes and laughed a little.
Arianna grinned and shook her head, getting in the passenger side of his car when he unlocked it. “That’s one way to put it.” She agreed, and shut the door, settling back comfortably. That was one of the major things she liked about having Dawn as a best friend. Finally, someone as weird, if not more so, than her.
Billy drove her home, letting the radio fill up the silence instead of talking. And while there was no talking, somehow, he ended up thinking.
Why weren’t he and Arianna dating?
She was cute, if not a little spazzy, and she was one of his best friends. When he’d met her, he’d contemplated asking her out, but he’d never went through on it, and he really couldn’t remember why.
What was stopping him?
Pulling up in front of Arianna’s apartment building, he smiled to her and flipped off the radio. “So I’ll see you later?”
She nodded with a smile, opening the car door and starting to get out. “I’ll call you. Good luck getting back the sculpture.” She headed in without another word, and went up, getting ready for bed.
Once Arianna was finally under the covers, and slipping off to sleep, her mind vaguely going over what she needed to get done for tomorrow… the phone rang. She groaned and sat up in bed, looking over at the clock before grabbing the phone. “What?”
“Why aren’t we dating?” Billy.
She blinked a few times, staring straight ahead as her mind fuzzily tried to process what was being said. “What?” She repeated.
Billy sounded more awake now, and that bugged her a little. “Why aren’t we dating?” He asked again. “I know Dawn’s nuts, but I was just thinking…”
“You were thinking you wanted to date me?” She asked blankly, and wondered why this was so strange. Maybe because it’d been an age since she’d last been asked out. Guys tended to find her strange.
“… Yeah. Think you could go for that?”
“… I don’t know.” Confusion set in now that she was more awake, and had fully processed. “I was trying to sleep, before.” The jab went unsaid in that sentence.
“Sorry.” His quiet laugh that always sounded so relaxed came through on the other end. “I was just thinking.”
“Oh, déjà vu.” Arianna replied dryly.
Billy laughed again. “Should I just call you later and ask again, or just never talk about it ever again?”
“I’m still figuring that out.”
“… Well in case you haven’t noticed, it’s late.”
“Says the one who called me.”
“I didn’t expect you to take so long thinking of an answer.”
“Hey!” She laughed, and then rubbed her eyes. “I don’t know. I guess it could be nice.” There wasn’t any reason it couldn’t be. Right?
“… So is that a yes?”
She could hear the frown in his voice, and it made her smile. “Yes. That’s a yes. We can give it a shot.” She thought it over, and then shrugged. “As long as it doesn’t make things weird if nothing ever comes of it.” She didn’t want that. Screwing things up with their friendship was the last thing she wanted, and she wasn’t about to risk it if she didn’t have to.
“It won’t.” Billy promised, and then, came the in-voice grin. “So you think tomorrow night, after work?”
“I think so.” Arianna grinned as well, leaning back against her headboard. “At least, it sounds right. Call me tomorrow, I’ll be sure then.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.” She smirked. “Can I go to sleep now?”
“I guess so.” The quiet laugh again.
“Oh, thanks.” She shook her head. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Bye.”
Arianna hung up and settled back in, and looked up at the ceiling as she thought over what just happened. She was going out on a date. With Billy Rinault. One of her best friends. Weird, and yet…
Grabbing the phone and dialing again, Arianna waited impatiently for an answer. She got one in a few minutes, in the form of an aggravated sounding brother. “Hello?”
“Busy?”
“Was just getting to sleep, what the hell do you want?”
“I have to tell you what happened.” Arianna sat up again, leaning back against the headboard, and proceeding to tell Sam everything.
What fun was it if you didn’t share everything with the paranoid older brother the second it happened?
